Internet of Things is not just about one technology; it is about the eco-system of technology. That is the main take-away from this years edition of Asia IoT Business Platform which was held for two days at Hotel Istana Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 21st edition saw a gathering of IoT thought leaders and key stakeholders from the public and private sectors share and come to a better understanding on the country’s digital transformation journey.

Deputy Under Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Puan Nordina Idris, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), during her keynote address, spoke of the importance of IoT for the upcoming digital era. “IoT is one of the strategic pillars in driving the existing and upcoming digital initiatives”, she said adding that there are more than 150 Malaysian IoT-based industry players who have actively ventured into IoT businesses last year.

Malaysia’s National IoT Strategic Roadmap was launched in 2015 and expected to assist the Gross National Income growth to RM42.5 billion by 2025. Many projects and schemes have since been launched to help businesses adopt IoT with encouraging results. A survey by IoT Business Platform in 2017, showed more than 85% of Malaysian businesses were either exploring or implementing IoT.

Having said that, many Malaysian companies still do not know how to go about implementation. The same report showed just over 50% of businesses were in the fact-finding stage of IoT solutions. While there isn’t a one-stop solution where the enterprise can go to, they are encouraged to start small and work their way towards proper integration. At the same time, the country needs to find a practical approach towards talent development, so as to see better results in resolving the talent pool challenge.

Other key points discussed included areas of transport & logistics, real-time monitoring, machine learning and robots being deployed in operation processes.

The Conference-cum-Exhibition featured speakers from Maxis, Celcom, Axiata, CIMB, Sime Darby Plantation and many more.
