Databricks, announced the appointment of Jason Bissell as General Manager and Senior Vice President for Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Japan (APJ), to oversee the growth of its business and operations in the region.

His appointment forms part of the company’s strategy to widen its footprint across the APJ region, having recently established its regional headquarters in Singapore.

Jason brings more than 25 years experience running hyper-growth tech companies, most recently as General Manager for cloud data integration firm, Talend, where he was responsible for driving growth across six countries in Asia-Pacific..Before this time, Jason was Managing Director and VP of International Markets for San Francisco-based business intelligence and analytics firm, Birst, for 3 years, during which time he was responsible for growing its business outside of the United States (USA).

Founded by the creators of unified analytics engine Apache Spark, Databricks, which has its headquarters in San Francisco, provides a Unified Analytics Platform for data science teams to collaborate with data engineering and lines of business to build data products. Databricks’ Unified Analytics Platform accelerates innovation by removing silos and unifying data science, engineering and business, enabling enterprises to adopt tangible Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning strategies.

“The organisations that succeed in unifying their data at scale with the best AI technologies will be the ones that succeed with AI, says Jason.

“Despite the interest and investment many firms in APJ have made to machine learning and AI, very few have succeeded in leveraging its real value, often because data science and data engineering are siloed in different systems and different organisations. This is the ‘AI dilemma’, and something we intend to resolve for businesses in Singapore and the wider APJ region.”

Databricks’ unified platform is powered by Apache Spark, which boasts one of the largest open source communities in Big Data, with over 1000 contributors from 250+ organisations across the globe. The company was established in 2013 and services global enterprise customers across multiple industries, including Salesforce, Viacom, Shell and HP.

Commenting on Jason’s appointment, Ron Gabrisko, Chief Revenue Officer at Databricks, said: “Singapore and the wider AP&J market represents a big opportunity for Databricks as we work towards helping more businesses to truly embrace AI. We are delighted to welcome Jason to the Databricks’ family. He’s a dynamic leader who brings extensive expertise in cloud and analytics, and a deep knowledge of the region.

“We have already engaged with customers in 12 countries in APAC, and expect our growth to be rapid. Jason’s success in Asia, as well as his strong track record of building hyper-growth companies in Asia-Pacific, will be instrumental in this journey, and I look forward to the positive contributions he will make.”
