Probably some of the most important emerging technologies right now that companies are relying on for their digital advancements are the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). IoT because organisations today are now comprised of various devices and systems connected to each other through the Internet. For their smart operations, processes and automation of systems, enterprises utilise AI.

The combination of the two, coined as AIoT, is now bubbling under development, which promises a connected and smart future. AIoT works even better in conjunction with two more technological advancements, 5G for faster and seamless communications and big data for analysing and deriving insights from the data of all the connected things.

AI and IoT have mutual benefits with each other. AI technologies enhance IoT by providing algorithms and automation for data management and analytics. On the other hand, IoT infrastructures help AI in connectivity and faster exchange of information.

When used together, AIoT empowers a slew of use cases in many industries by enabling improved human to machine interactions and data management. Organisations use AIoT for their various devices and systems so they can operate in a more proactive rather than reactive manner, compared to traditional IoT. This is because AI algorithms enable connected devices to analyse what they should do and continuously learn, without needing direct input from a human being.

AIoT leverages devices from the smallest to large-scale operations. Wearable things, including smartwatches and accessories and AR devices, can use AIoT to exchange data and analyse it at the same time. Let’s say a smartwatch can connect to a user’s mobile phone for health monitoring and with AIoT, the data collected can be used to advise the users about their proposed health activities and exercises. The data can also be analysed against thousands or even millions of other users around the world and other data streams for more comprehensive analysis.

‘Smart homes’ will be another area where AIoT will shine. With AIoT, smart devices, such as sensors, smart appliances and lightings are able to learn behaviours and habits, and act accordingly based on the preferences of the users. This can introduce improved power efficiency, cost-effective consumptions and efficient activities inside the home.

AIoT can also empower smart roads and smart cities, with devices from different establishments connected to each other. Vehicles can be guided accordingly based on the AI’s algorithm embedded in roads, vehicles and traffic lights, among other things, to reduce heavy traffic, for example. AIoT can also be applied to the power grids of cities to optimise energy consumption. In addition, AIoT will be able to help in enhanced surveillance and monitoring within a city.

Lastly, businesses also will be able to greatly benefit from the use of AIoT for their respective industries, helping them through automation, AI-enabled robotics, smart supply chain management and predictive sensors. The future of AIoT is bright, as the development of the technology promises a radical change on how we interact with things and, most probably in the future, everything around us.
