A big-hitting Chinese Big Data business is establishing significant Cambridge operations.

Business Big Data (BBD) has chosen Cambridge to cosy up to best-of-breed companies in the Big Data arena bridging segments such as informatics, analytics, FinTech and alternative finance.

BBD was founded in Chengdu, Sichuan Province China and formed a UK venture operating from Canary Wharf in London and a US operation.

Now the company’s UK CEO, Helen Wang, says BBD has decided to take a presence at St John’s Innovation Centre.

BBD wants to connect with businesses, academic centres and financial sector companies as it extends its networks and activities globally.

BBD is under three years old but has a team of almost 500 people across networks in Singapore as well as China and Europe.

It has launched its first innovative product ‘New Economy Index’ (NEI) – a software system developed to enable more effective and penetrating analysis of the performance of new economy companies and movements in national economies.

BBD has seen significant uptake of its products and services in China. An alliance between Chinese financial and business media leader Caixin, MasterCard and BBD was recently announced – promoting the NEI as a means to track changes in overall economic activity in China’s new economy, embracing energy conservation & environmental protection; new IT information services; biotechnology; advanced manufacturing, renewable energy; advanced materials; new energy vehicles; hi-tech services; Research & Development and Financial &Legal Services.

As well as providing a high level of ongoing structural changes in the balance between the old economy and the new, the NEI dives deeper into the capital, labour and technological outputs. Clearly there is a market awaiting this kind of penetrating analytical system beyond China’s borders and worldwide.

In addition to building UK teams to develop the BBD business in Europe and beyond, Helen Wang has announced that Cambridge based Professor Alan Barrell will be working with the company as international adviser.

Professor Barrell was at the UK launch of BBD London in May and in June visited BBD’s headquarters in Chengdu.

He said: “I am honoured and excited to be working with this wonderful young team who use the BBD company acronym not only to describe the company as ‘Business Big Data’ but also speak of their determination to ‘build big dreams’.

“The dreams are already becoming reality in terms of international business growth and a workforce and associates now numbering more than 500 and growing by the day. I believe this is a company with a great international future and it is excellent news that BBD will have a Cambridge presence.”
