The written word is a fundamental tool of communication that has played a critical role in human civilisation through the ages. It is an essential skill that allows us to express our thoughts, ideas, and emotions in a tangible form, which can be shared and understood by others.
These days, writing has become an essential skill for success in many fields, including academia, business, and the arts. Effective writing skills are critical for developing persuasive arguments, conducting research, and presenting the information. It is also a valuable tool for entrepreneurs, who use writing to communicate with customers, investors, and stakeholders.
We’ve now reached an interesting intersection in human history, where with the advancement of technology and the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), machines are becoming very capable of performing creativity-related tasks (like writing) that were once thought to be exclusive to humans.
Should we be worried, or will this AI technology help us make writer’s block a thing of the past and save the day? Let’s find out.
At the Advent of AI-Generated Content, Where Does Human Creativity Stand?
There are now a growing number of AI-generated content creators that are accessible online by pretty much anyone. Articles, marketing copy, blog entries, brochures, videos, photos or any sort of social media content are just some of the many types of content that AI can now create, and with the way it is learning, the end products are getting better!
As a user, all you need to do is just key in your requests or requirements in the form of a short description of what you want and voila, it churns out your content!
One of the main advantages of AI-generated content creation is, without a doubt, speed. Machines can produce written (or any other) content at an incredible rate, which is a significant advantage for businesses that require a high volume of content regularly. AI can create articles, reports, and other written materials in a matter of seconds, which would take humans much longer to complete.
Unlike humans, machines do not get tired, bored, or make mistakes (Well, kind of. More on this later). They can produce increasingly high-quality written content that is free from spelling and grammatical errors, and which adheres to a consistent style and tone.
Another advantage of AI-generated writing is its ability to analyse huge amounts of data quickly and generate insights, presenting them in a clear and concise manner and making it easier for humans to understand complex information. This is especially useful in fields such as finance, marketing, and healthcare, where accurate data analysis is crucial.
Thus, AI content creators can be viewed as a double-edged sword. On the one hand, technology eases us in terms of both time and money; on the other, with its ability to learn and produce some eye-gazing content at the drop of a hat, will it one day wipe people out of the equation entirely?
Now, some would say that AI-generated content is here to displace humans but I would argue otherwise. I would say, rather than replacing us, AI is here to better enhance our creativity. Rather than being on track to completely replace humans at what they do, humans and AI can instead have a commensalism relationship where the former benefits from the other without damaging or benefiting the latter.
Blurring the Lines Between Human and Machine
The line between what is created by humans and what is created by computers is blurring rapidly in today’s environment, and it will only become even more pronounced in the future.
Despite the hype, however, we need to remember that Artificial Intelligence-powered content is still in its infancy and will not replace human content creators (yet). After all, there are still certain limitations to AI-generated writing and other content creation. Machines lack the ability to be creative, and they cannot think outside the box. Humans can create content that is emotional, imaginative, and thought-provoking, which is not possible with AI-generated writing. AI can try to mimic this as closely as possible but it could never beat the real thing. At least, that’s what we’d like to believe.
Nevertheless, let us have a look at some of the AI-powered content producers that are available out there and see how they may aid you with:
- Copywriting.
- Creating and editing images.
- Production of video.
AI for Copywriting – ChatGPT
ChatGPT is an example of a powerful copywriting AI model developed by OpenAI that is currently taking the world by storm due to the wide coverage of news both positive and negative.
You can ask ChatGPT to write you an email, an essay, a poem, a rap, a letter, a grocery list, or anything else you can think of using its conversational AI engine.
In addition to jotting down your thoughts, it can also carry in-depth conversations with you on everything from “What are colours?” to the existential question, “What is the meaning of life?” ChatGPT even has strong STEM skills; it can build code, debug existing code, and answer complex mathematical equations. The best thing is that, since it is still in the testing and user input phase, the service is now offered at no cost to the general public.
Playing around with the powerful AI engine, I sought to find answers to the age-old question of, which is the better pet, a cat, or a dog? To which ChatGPT answered:
Diplomatic, yet impressive, nonetheless.
AI for Image Creation – Dall-E
Dall-E may be the most intriguing tool here. It is a deep learning model that is created by the already mentioned, OpenAI, to produce digital images from “prompts,” or natural language descriptions. From this application, you can customise a list of drop-down questions with this tool.
Various prompts, such as “a photo of the _____ of ______,” can be edited thanks to the tool’s image-text pair library.
An example of how Dall-E works
You have your pick among photographs, illustrations, sketches, and paintings depicting animals, signs, objects, people, and more from a wide range of artistic periods and genres. The results are limitless.
AI for Video Creation – Synthesia.io
By using Synthesia.io, you can convert text descriptions into videos that feature artificial but lifelike actors and voices.
Watch the example below:
Although there is still a long way to go before AI-generated characters are fully believable, at least we are almost there, right? Almost.
A few AI Kinks to be Ironed out
While the capabilities that the AI are demonstrating are undoubtedly impressive and even revolutionary, there are a few major drawbacks though. If we take ChatGPT as an example, the chatbot frequently reaches capacity due to its overwhelming popularity. However, OpenAI is already exploring the possibility of developing a more robust, paid professional version that would be available 24/7.
Additionally, like any AI model, ChatGPT can occasionally produce inaccuracies or factual fallacies including:
- Misinterpreting context: ChatGPT can sometimes misinterpret the context of a question, leading to a wrong answer. This often happens when the question is ambiguous or when it lacks sufficient information.
- Parroting biased information: ChatGPT can sometimes parrot biased information that it has learned from the data it has analysed. This can lead to answers that are skewed towards a particular point of view, which may not be accurate or factual.
- Incomplete or outdated information: At the time of writing, ChatGPT’s knowledge is limited to 2021 data, which means it can’t answer current questions. This means ChatGPT can provide incomplete or outdated information, especially when it is asked about topics that are rapidly evolving or changing.
- Misleading or incorrect statistics: ChatGPT can sometimes produce misleading or incorrect statistics, especially when it is not trained on a wide enough range of data or when the data is biased or inaccurate.
To mitigate these inaccuracies or factual fallacies, it is essential to understand the limitations of ChatGPT and to use it as a tool rather than a definitive source of information. It is also important to fact-check the answers provided by ChatGPT and to seek additional information from other sources to ensure the accuracy and validity of the information.
Will AI Replace Human Content Creators?
Unfortunately, there is no one-and-only answer to this conundrum. While some are optimistic about the potential benefits of AI in enhancing content quality and accuracy, others are wary of the technology’s impact on human creativity and expression. My opinion is that AI will or already has changed content creation as we know it. Things just will not be the same again now that Pandora’s box has been opened, so to speak.
Making the choice to employ AI in the creation of content requires thought on several fronts. As a starting point, consider the type of material you hope to produce and the amount of effort that will inevitably be put in by hand. An AI-based solution could be helpful if you have a lot of formatting and editing that needs to be done manually.
Anyone, be it marketers, students, teachers, researchers, writers, or even artists who need to generate plenty of content quickly may find that AI helpers are the way to go. However, they may struggle with content that relies more on creativity or expression.
As with any form of expression, creating content calls for originality, creativity and in-depth familiarity with the subject matter. If you want to avoid making obvious mistakes in information generated by AI programmes, then you should always have a human set of eyes review it.
As these systems continue to learn and improve, it is likely that they will one day be able to produce original, thought-provoking writing, and video content that is creative or help artists to generate eye-catching pictures. AI Content Generator can help content creators by serving as inspiration, making suggestions, seeing patterns, and even checking for plagiarism. Though AI assistants may not be able to fully replace content creators just yet, already they can be a useful tool for improving the quality of content produced.
So let me really put myself out there: Content creators cannot be replaced by any form of AI assistance.
Nevertheless, despite the rising publicity around how “lifesaving” AI assistants are, there are opinions out there stating otherwise. To find out more, stay tuned for a follow-up article entitled, “The Arrival of AI: Can We Humans Cope?”
I do not usually end my writings with a poem, but since we’re on the subject of human creativity, here’s a demonstration of ChatGPT’s attempt at becoming a modern William Shakespeare, which again begs the question, should we be worried?:
Goodbye, my readers, it’s time to part,
Our journey ends, but our memories start.
Though distance may lie between us now,
Our connection will live, forever somehow.
In every thought and every dream,
Your support will always be supreme.
And though we must say farewell today,
I’ll remember you always, in every way.
So let us not be filled with tears,
For this goodbye is just temporary fears.
For in our mind, we’ll always be,
Together, now and eternally.
