Interest in artificial intelligence (AI)-related jobs has surged over the past five years. Data from leading job portal Indeed shows a jump in job searches of 148.6% for these roles between March 2018 and March 2023.

The job market has responded to the boom in interest in AI-related career prospects. Proof of it is the 95% increase in job postings on Indeed’s site during the same time period. While the last year has seen a decrease of 36%, the industry remains ripe with opportunities for job seekers in the long term.

The most significant growth in job postings over the last five years has been for Research Fellows. This role saw an increase of 58.81% in said time period. This is followed by machine learning engineers (18.74%), data scientists (13.06%) and software engineers (5.11%).

In Demand and Highly Paid

This growth in AI-related careers comes as the Singapore government announced plans to prioritise employment pass (EP) applications for a number of roles that it recently added to its Shortage Occupation List (SOL) released in March this year. Some of the jobs that made the list include AI scientists, data scientists and software engineers.

These roles are usually well paid above the average monthly salary of SGD $5,070 in Singapore. Indeed data reveals the average monthly salary for senior data scientists is SGD $10,395. It is followed by software architects at SGD $10,071 and data engineers at SGD $8,171. Next are data scientists at SGD $8,108 and machine learning engineers at SGD $7,776.

Karthik Sudhakar, Senior Manager, International Strategy and Operations, at Indeed, said: “Over the last few years, the AI industry has rapidly grown in Singapore with the nation cementing itself as a global hub for top tier tech talent and innovation. The opportunities are only set to grow as we see the government continue to invest in and prioritise AI, tech and innovation. As AI completely revolutionises industries and the world of work, we expect to see more opportunities and new career prospects develop in this exciting space. ”
