The highly anticipated Big Data Week that ran from the 19th to the 25th of September, was kicked off in KLCC at the BIGIT conference series and exhibition. It was held in the hope that it would foster networking between vendors and end-users in creating an ecosystem for the Big Data community to leverage off. The conference hosted 3,500 participants from across Asean, 84 world-class speakers, 38 leading exhibitors, 41 sponsors and 17 satellite events focused on building a data-driven Asean creating an excellent conducive environment for business development and networking.

With other Big Data awareness programs happening concurrently all around KL city, the BDW was a well received event by MDEC from both user and vendors, that helped create greater awareness to the public on Big Data and how it can benefit users in their everyday lives as well as bringing together different vendors to collaborate in creating a better environment for business and society.

Other events and workshops conducted during the week included the Pepperthon Hackathon, Incubio Data Driven Startup Workshop, Big Data Malaysia Deep Learning The World, Cloudera Big Data Analytics, CP Australia Congress 2016, Microsoft R workshop, International BDA Symposium by University Teknologi Mara, The Centre of Applied Data Science talks, ORtech self service workshop for everyone, as well as Fusionex Big Data Analytics Workshop to name a few.

BDW is the leading global platform of interconnected community events focusing on the social, political and technological impacts of data. Its objective is to strive to connect data professionals helping to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and of new ideas about data.

Kuala Lumpur is the 2016 city partner of Global Big Data Week and the congregation has been officially recognised as the biggest in Asia this year.

The end of Big Data Week however does not mark and end, but of on going efforts for many more Big Data events and workshops to further grow and close the gap between those in-the-know and those who wish to learn and experience the world of Big Data.

Some of the speakers at the event include CEO TheCads, Sharala Axryd, international thought leaders such as Harvard Business School Professor Karim R. Lakhani, director of Centre of Data Innovation in the US, Daniel Castro, Cloudera co-founder Amr Awadallah and Cornell University data scientist Lutz Finger.

MDEC’s Asean Data Analytics eXchange (ADAX) platform, due to launch by year end will mark the culmination of the work they have done to bring Big Data to Malaysia and Asean countries. The platform will be used as a hub for businesses to learn and teach Big Data Analytics as well as to be used as a visualisation tool and training grounds for the whole of Asean to collaborate in bringing Big Data Analytics to the next level.

MDEC CEO Datuk Yasmin Mahmood said there are 22 multinational BDA companies from six countries currently setup in Malaysia as of August 2016. Malaysia aims to produce 2,000 data scientists and 16,000 data professionals by 2020 through MDEC’s initiatives and partnerships.

Big Data Week Asia 2016 is a week-long congregation at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre initiated by both MDEC and Olygen Sdn Bhd.
