Telstra International, the global arm of leading telecommunications and technology company Telstra, and Lautan Variasi Sdn Bhd, Malaysia, are collaborating to set up satellite teleport facilities in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, offering geostationary (GEO) satellite services to help bridge the nation’s digital divide for rural and underserved communities.

“Telstra owns and operates a network of satellite earth stations in the Asia-Pacific region to provide satellite operators and service providers, as well as carriers, with best-in-class connectivity services to almost every GEO satellite services in Asia. We are excited to launch earth stations in Malaysia and work with Lautan Variasi to provide world-class, cost-effective, tailored, and scalable satellite services coverage in Malaysia to enhance connectivity and service delivery in remote areas, closing the digital divide,” said Roary Stasko, CEO at Telstra International.

Telstra International Will Help Lautan Variasi with Satellite Services

Targeted to be ready for service by July 2024, Telstra International will invest in gateways and hubs and provide managed teleport and satellite capacity services, while Lautan Variasi will invest in land and ground teleport facilities to provide fast and efficient connectivity services for remote customers in Malaysia.

Lautan Variasi is building a state-of-the-art satellite teleport facility alongside a full-service data centre in the heart of Cyberjaya, located in the Silicon Valley of Malaysia. These facilities will not only provide direct services for their customers, but also support local and regional telecommunication players for their hosting and capacity expansion. By mid-2025, Lautan Variasi expects to be offering high-speed, low-latency connectivity services for Malaysia and throughout Asia Pacific.

This next-generation satellite connectivity service will provide an improved experience for consumers and create new opportunities for our small business and enterprise customers—especially those that require continuous coverage or additional redundancy from backhaul to back-up, from IoT to supporting emergency services, and from satellite broadband to supporting VSAT enterprise verticals, like oil and gas, agritech, healthcare, and education,” commented Datuk Syed Nasir Hussin, Managing Director of Lautan Variasi.

“We have signed a 10-year collaboration agreement with Telstra and we intend to work strategically and closely together in the satellite service space over the long term,” continued Datuk Hussin. “It’s a project like this that motivates technology providers like us, delivering innovative outcomes and supporting our remote communities in Malaysia. This undertaking is another key milestone for Lautan Variasi’s vision of becoming a regional player by 2026.”

The partnership complements Telstra’s T25 strategy to grow and extend its network leadership position in the international market and boost coverage across countries while providing an exceptional customer experience in every way.
