Recently, HP Malaysia captivated tech enthusiasts during their “Putting the I in AI” event at Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Held as a launch event for their highly anticipated AI-powered laptops and a glimpse at HP’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) development efforts.
Alex Tan, the Managing Director for HP Malaysia, began the event by delving into the current state of the digital economy. He revealed that the digital economy has undergone a remarkable surge in recent years, contributing to notable growth of the digital economy’s GDP by 24.4%. He also shared that there is potential for the growth to reach up to 25.5%. Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) are some of the major contributors to the growth. Malaysia is home to 1.2 million SMBs, with a substantial amount of them being data-driven and AI-ready, ranking the country as number two for AI readiness in the ASEAN region.
Nonetheless, as per Alex’s observations, despite the readiness exhibited and being ranked at number two, there are still persistent concerns regarding the potential adverse effects of AI on people’s lives, particularly the enduring apprehension that AI will lead to job displacement.
Alex believes this is because AI is still largely unknown to many and there are yet proper regulations as well as guidelines for utilising AI. Recognising the importance of addressing concerns and fostering understanding about AI in a tangible and practical manner, HP made a strategic decision to be at the forefront of spreading awareness about AI through the launch of its AI-powered laptops.
Kong Meng, Managing Director for Southeast Asia at HP, elaborated on the subject further. He believes that many are willing to embrace AI, yet concerns such as job displacement and privacy cause many to become hesitant in fully leveraging AI. Kong Meng holds the belief that HP’s AI-powered laptops offer promising solutions to address these concerns. These innovative laptops are equipped with built-in AI capabilities that are able to offer a range of intelligent features and functionalities that not only enhance productivity and efficiency but also mitigate the perceived risks associated with AI adoption.
Another notable advantage of utilising laptops equipped with built-in AI is their capability to deliver faster results. This enhanced speed and efficiency stem from the AI’s capacity to optimise processes, streamline tasks, and anticipate user needs more effectively than cloud-based versions.
Kong Meng added, unlike cloud-based AI systems that rely on remote servers for processing, AI-powered laptops leverage onboard AI capabilities to execute tasks locally. This localised processing allows for faster data analysis, decision-making, and response times. For example, if he were to use CoPilot to help him summarise 50 emails, by the time it is done, Kong Meng probably would have read five to ten emails. However, with built-in AI, such tasks can be executed and completed at a much faster rate.
Ricky Handrian, Head of Business Personal Systems Category for Southeast Asia at HP, reiterated and expanded upon this sentiment. He emphasised that in the current landscape, there is a growing desire among individuals to automate mundane and repetitive tasks. By automating these routine activities, individuals can free up valuable time and mental energy, enabling them to redirect their focus towards more productive and critical tasks.
In addition to the imperative for task automation, there is a growing demand for heightened security and privacy measures to facilitate the seamless integration of AI assistants into professional settings.
One of the primary concerns for professionals is the risk of data breaches or unauthorised access to sensitive information. With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated, professionals need robust security measures in place to safeguard against potential attacks. This includes encryption protocols, multi-factor authentication, and regular security audits to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities in AI assistant systems.
Rickly is firmly confident that HP’s AI-powered laptops will be able to deliver the whole experience to their users. To that end, HP aims to deliver the said enhanced and secure AI experience with the launch of their extensive portfolio of AI Personal Computers (PCs):
