The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has catalysed transformative advancement across various sectors, and the healthcare industry is also affected by this profound impact.

The wave of innovation sparked by AI in the healthcare industry has not only revolutionised established healthcare institutions but has also paved the way for the emergence of pioneering tech startups like NexoPrima and SmartPeep. These startups are leveraging AI capabilities to address healthcare worker shortages and other critical challenges such as healthcare delivery, patient care and medical diagnostics.

Nurtured within the vibrant ecosystem of Cyberview Sdn Bhd, both NexoPrima and SmartPeep have blossomed into established tech startups aiming to drive innovation in the healthcare industry.

Case in point, both startups were featured in the Cyberview Living Lab Accelerator (CLLA) 18th Cohort Demo Day 2024 held recently. This event highlighted the latest round of the CLLA program, showcasing seven homegrown startups offering technological solutions in Smart Living & Green Technology, Digital & Data Solutions, Industrial IoT, AI, and Robotics.

Interestingly, the startups underwent a rigorous five-month program designed to refine their products and ensure they meet market demands. The event, inaugurated by Kamarul Ariffin, CEO of Cyberview, showcased the innovative solutions developed by participating startups and provided a platform for partnerships, market access, and commercialisation.

Prior to the CLLA Cohort 18 Startup Pitches, we had the opportunity to interview They Yu-Shu (CTO & Co-Founder at SmartPeep), Hairuzaki M Yunus (Business Development Manager at NexoPrima Sdn Bhd), and Engku Ahmad Faisal (Director & Principal Consultant at NexoPrima Sdn Bhd), who provided insights into the innovative work being done by these homegrown startups.

The AI-Powered Patient Monitoring System: SmartPeep

Yu-Shu describes SmartPeep as an innovative healthcare specialising AI-powered video monitoring system designed to ensure the safety of and optimise healthcare delivery for patients, particularly the elderly and critical patients.

He further explained that the SmartPeep monitoring system is modular and expandable in nature, offering hospitals, nursing homes, or clinics the flexibility to deploy the system independently or integrate it seamlessly into their existing infrastructure.

In terms of security, Yu-Shu explained that SmartPeep follows fundamental principles in cybersecurity to ensure robust security, privacy and data protection, “We [SmartPeep] adhere to fundamental principles such as isolating the system when necessary, granting access only to authorised personnel, and ensuring that all data is encrypted either on-premises or in close proximity to the cloud.

Additionally, according to Yu-Shu, their monitoring system will also be overseen by third-party security companies and the hospitals themselves to ensure adherence to the highest standards of cybersecurity and operational integrity.

Saving Time and Lives Through Smart Device Integration: NexoPrima

Engku explained that NexoPrima provides a multi-vendor medical device integration system, designed to streamline and enhance the management of medical devices within healthcare facilities. In other words, consolidating multi-vendor medical devices into a single unified platform, and enabling efficient data collection from connected devices to be collected, stored, and integrated into the Hospital Information System (HIS).

Hairuzaki then shared the stark reality that Malaysia faces a significant deficiency in terms of system integration for hospitals. He emphasised that despite advancements in medical technology and the growing reliance on digital healthcare solutions, many hospitals in Malaysia still struggle with fragmented and disjointed systems.

In response to this critical issue, Hairuzaki expressed hope that NexoPrima’s innovative medical device integration systems could serve as a transformative solution. By automating and streamlining the process of gathering patient data from various medical devices, doctors and nurses can redirect their attention away from manual data entry tasks and towards direct patient care.

The NexoPrima duo admitted the daunting nature of their task, recognising the immense complexity inherent in hospital ecosystems. Hospitals typically operate within vast and intricate systems comprising numerous departments, specialised units, and interconnected processes. According to both of them, integrating their innovative solutions into existing hospital infrastructures requires meticulous planning, extensive collaboration, and careful consideration of various factors.

Despite the daunting nature of their task, the NexoPrima duo expressed unwavering determination and optimism to drive meaningful change for the healthcare industry.

What’s Next for NexoPrima and SmartPeep?

During the interview, representatives from both NexoPrima and SmartPeep affirmed that, at the present moment, there were no immediate plans for collaboration between the two startups. They clarified that their respective areas of focus and expertise had yet to overlap. However, both startups were quick to acknowledge the potential for collaboration in the future, recognising the synergies that could arise from combining their innovative technologies and complementary capabilities.

Yu-Shu shared that SmartPeep is currently working on developing systems tailored for hospice care. This initiative aims to empower family members to provide better care for their elderly relatives who are receiving hospice services while staying at home. This approach recognises the importance of integrating technology seamlessly into the caregiving process, ensuring that it enhances, rather than disrupts, the quality of care provided to patients and their families.

Engku disclosed a significant development within NexoPrima, revealing that the company was in the process of harnessing its internal engineering expertise to develop a proprietary AI system. This AI initiative aimed to further enhance NexoPrima’s existing medical device integration system, representing a strategic investment in advancing the company’s technological capabilities and enhancing its value proposition to healthcare providers.
