Nineteen data-driven startups have graduated from the Asean Data Startup Accelerator (Adsa), a collaborative programme between Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the United Kingdom-based Open Data Institute (ODI).

Adsa is a six-month accelerator programme to help Asean startups cultivate network, business and data skills through a series of intensive boot camps conducted in the Asean Data Analytics Exchange here.

In a statement on Tuesday, MDEC said, Adsa received 110 applications from regional and international startups in 2017, and 10 Malaysian and 10 Asean startups were shortlisted for the programme.

“Several startups have already attracted the attention of large institutions – Allianz Malaysia Bhd, Axiata Business Services Sdn Bhd, and University of Malaya’s Nanotechnology & Catalysis Research Centre,” it said.

MDEC Chief Operating Officer, Datuk Ng Wan Peng, said Adsa would be a great platform to promote data literacy and nurture relevant skills in big data analytics (BDA) and artificial intelligence, which were crucial for local and regional digital economy growth.

Meanwhile, ODI Head of Startups, Orsola de Marco, said Malaysia and Asean in general were fertile grounds for data-enabled innovation.

“The idea that data could enable innovation if it was more widely shared is a new concept, and we are delighted that startups on the programme are taking steps to place BDA at the heart of their business,” she said.
