Biometrics refers to our bodies’ unique traits that may be used to identify us. At the moment, the two most common biometrics are fingerprint recognition and face recognition. In retail outlets, airports, and other public venues, fingerprint scanners are becoming more ubiquitous. Mobile devices are also adopting facial recognition technologies.

Fingerprints and faces are distinguishing characteristics that cannot be readily reproduced or recreated. Given that they are difficult to fabricate and hard to steal, they enable a high level of security.

New ways of identifying oneself are evolving as technology improves. According to NEC, a global pioneer in IT and network technology, we may soon be able to unlock our phones, bank accounts, or even our cars using our unique biometric acoustics or even simply our facial characteristics.

A Brighter World

If you are familiar with the NEC tagline, “Orchestrating a brighter world,” then you are most likely aware that the company is working toward a more significant purpose for the advancement of humanity. They have been quite active over the past several years in terms of innovation and the invention of technologies that will play a significant part in the path of globalisation. The advent of 5G has made it possible to substantially increase the amount of data and information that can be sent, which in turn has made a wide variety of digitalisation opportunities and technological adoptions possible.

Mr Chong Kai Wooi, Managing Director of NEC Malaysia, stated during the recent Media Familiarisation Tour back at NEC Customer Experience Centre in Mid Valley City that, “Fast, accurate, and secure biometrics technology is necessary towards meeting Malaysia’s National Digital ID aspirations in driving efficiencies in administrative services and providing greater security and convenience for all Malaysians.”

The centre showcases a number of different prototypes of solutions, such as digital ID management solutions with biometrics and Artificial Intelligence, civil ID solutions, and other solutions that provide people with secure proof of identity to assist them in accessing public and private facilities in a fair and convenient way. The following is a collection of intriguing prototypes that are deserving of your interest.

  1. NEC Smart Facility Solutions

If you can recollect sci-fi movies from the early 2000s, there were a plethora of premises that highlighted the role of Artificial Intelligence and machine-learning in monitoring human behaviour, facial features, and human events through the lenses of pre-installed surveillance cameras, mobile phones, or flying drones. It is safe to say that the technology is presently available but not for the questionable purposes implied by the films.

Offices and public buildings may now recognise the faces of visitors who have registered digitally with the help of NEC’s Smart Facility Solutions, which includes facial recognition and AI analytics for enhanced security. In terms of detection and parameter, AI and ML have advanced to the point where they may be customised to meet specific needs. An incident trigger may be configured for particular factors, such as the failure to put on a mask or failing to adhere to the 1-metre social distance norm, and the system can track the real-time location of everyone registered with it.

  1. NEC’s Smart Retail Store

You are familiar with the Amazon GO convenience shop. An idea for a supermarket that does not employ any staff members, in which customers just select the groceries and other household goods they require by themselves, then scan their contactless payment method of choice at the store’s exit, and then leave the premises. Now, let’s take it to the next level by keeping the human component while also integrating the perks that technology offers.

The Smart Retail Store concept from NEC is part of the growing trend of connected retail stores powered by IoT and sensor technologies. It is possible for merchants to employ this concept to provide their consumers with a completely touchless, automated, and personalised shopping experience – allowing them to redefine convenience for their customers. Shoppers’ personal features are captured by cameras as they enter a store using biometrics technology, allowing retailers to identify them as registered identities. Sensors will track every item that is removed from the store’s shelves, subtracting it from the store’s inventory, and recording it in the payment kiosk. On the subject of advertising, Mr Chong also spoke about an in-store display system that will show you more information and comparisons to other items based on how long you’ve spent looking at a certain item.

Even better, it’s all connected to NEC Smart Facility Solutions and can be customised and upgraded to meet your specific requirements.

  1. Save Our Rivers With IoT Sensors

Life can only exist if there is water. Since the beginning of time, this has been the case. Modernity has blinded us to our responsibilities to the natural world. The waterways in this region are being polluted for the purpose of economic growth. This is a problem that NEC is aware of, and they have committed resources to address it, beginning with the rivers.

Using IoT sensors, NEC created a River Monitoring System that keeps tabs on water contamination and reservoir levels. The IoT sensors, in conjunction with AI and Machine-Learning, may generate predictions about water quality or level and take preventive actions to guarantee that the water is not polluted and stays at an adequate level. The IoT device may also be customised to the point where you can send one into space or any place on Earth to research and offer real-time data from natural phenomena.

The manufacturing industry, on the other hand, may gain from the application of these technologies to boost production output, anticipate equipment failure, monitor production flow and equipment condition, predict maintenance, and manage assets and inventory. Besides, natural calamities such as flash floods and tsunamis can also be forecasted using data acquired by IoT devices.

A Brighter Future

In some ways, our first-hand experience of NEC technologies helps us get closer to NEC’s vision for the future. A brighter world and future aren’t as far-fetched as you would imagine, and it’s wonderful that NEC will be one of the brave new world’s pioneers.
