AirAsia’s ‘AIRVOLUTION’ is their inaugural hackathon competition to be held on the 18th and 19th of March 2017 at their latest and state-of-the-art headquarters, the RedQ here in Kuala Lumpur. The 18 hour competition will see 100 participants from around Asean, live, eat, sleep within the complex and compete for the grand prize of RM25,000 in cash, 100,000 Air Asia points and 5 free trips aboard the airline to AirAsia destinations.

Those interested will need to register by the 19th of February 2017. Participants who are shorlisted to participate in the competition and not situated within Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will be given free air travel to and from Malaysia to participate in the event.

The hackathon objectives, as stated on their website airvolution.airasia.com, offer 3 possible challenges where the one that will be the actual challenge, will only be announced on the day the hackathon will commence.

They are;

  1. How do you offer AirAsia guests the best flights and tours at lowest prices, as well as the best itineraries?
  2. How do you profile AirAsia fans based on their digital social footprints to improve customer experience?
  3. How do you reduce guests waiting times at the airport, from check-in to boarding?

The 18 hour event is in line with AirAsia’s aim towards spearheading innovation in the Asean region. Participants from various backgrounds such as software developers, designers, engineers and tech entrepreneur will be expected to grace the competition.

AirAsia invites participants to be part of this hackathon to better hone skills necessary in moving ahead in todays digital era by meeting with like-minded successful individuals from all over Asean.

Apart from that, they will also be rubbing shoulders with many industry leaders and successful entrepreneurs. They will also be getting sound advice from panellists who are ever willing to assist in building business ideas and invaluable mentoring towards developing their products.

Participants would need to present their ideas to judges by pitching and live demos. Each team will be given 8 minutes for their presentation, which includes a 30 second video, showing working proof of concept/prototype/app. After which the judges will conduct a question and answer session with the team.

Judging of completed or semi-completed projects, will be based on how the project will be of benefit to users or target audiences, creativity and originality of the solutions and ideas, design of the blueprint of a cash proof, front-end layout as well as the product execution that displays a clear timeline and effects of the results from start to finish.

Participants are free to use any number of platforms, be it web based, mobile, IoT, wearable tech or Rasberry Pi, while being able to scale to demand. Voting will be based on a 90:10 percent scoring system where public vote will contribute to 10% and the remainder awarded by the judges.

AirAsia will be working in collaboration with the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) in promoting its digital economy agenda within Malaysia and Asean countries. Winners from this hackathon will be given an opportunity to participate in the Big App Challenge (BAC) 4.0.

The BAC 4.0, which is running its third consecutive year, pools all the winners from hackathons across the nation throughout the year, streaming into two tracks of academia and professionals. The two tracks will then compete separately within their respective tracks for a grand cash prize at the end of the year and opportunities to grow their brain child into a startup through the assistance from MDEC.
