Alibaba Cloud and Sena Traffic Systems (Sena) have announced a collaboration to build a smart traffic management system at the “Traffic Made Intelligent” tech showcase in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The cloud powered, AI-driven system, which utilises Alibaba Cloud’s smart technologies, will be implemented with the aim of boosting the city’s efficiency, empowering the local economy and digitally transforming traffic management infrastructure in the city.

Sena is an enterprise that prides itself in building the “100% Made in Malaysia” TrafficSens, Malaysia’s first smart traffic system controllers that enable intelligent traffic management. The company also designs and develops other intelligent digital systems for urban city management, such as street light management as well as IoT applications for operations and management.

Through the collaboration, Sena will be responsible for the design and development of smart traffic light systems powered by its own patented algorithm, while Alibaba Cloud will bring to the table its cloud computing resources, talent development program as well as its City Brain platform.

Last year, Alibaba Cloud launched its cloud-empowered City Brain proof-of-concept in Malaysia, and found that Malaysians could potentially reduce up to 12% of the travel time (or more than 10 minutes on average) on the road with proper implementation of the system.

According to Selina Yuan, President of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence International, “The smart traffic solution will constantly learn and adapt to changing traffic environments, making the traffic management system a smart learning platform and no longer just an analytic tool.”

She added, “The smart traffic solution and technology have the potential to improve traffic situation not just in Malaysia, but also in the ASEAN region. We will continue to empower all Malaysian stakeholders, in both the public and private sectors, with cloud-empowered technology to enhance efficiency, advance innovation and succeed in the digital age. Through this collaboration, Alibaba Cloud and Sena will also share the best practices with other regional partners.”

Selina gave the opening speech during the announcement and launch ceremony held in KL yesterday. The event was also graced by the presence of YBrs. Tan Chuan Ou, Deputy Secretary General (Operations) of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM), Kenny Tan, General Manager of Alibaba Cloud Malaysia, Dato’ Tan Boon Hock, Managing Director of Sena Traffic Systems, Surina Shukri, CEO of MDEC and Dato’ Ng Wan Peng, COO of MDEC.

At the event, there were a few demonstrations which showcased some of the essential capabilities of smart traffic systems management, including congestion and incident detection, vehicle classification and counting, traffic light optimisation and traffic simulation.

Dato’ Tan Boon Hock, Sena’s Managing Director said, “Sena built Malaysia’s first traffic lights system and operated our smart traffic R&D lab. With our collaboration with Alibaba Cloud, Sena will have an even better and more complete solution to solve traffic congestion in urban landscapes. We are eager to move rapidly beyond our current development plans for smart traffic and are already looking at exploring developments in several intelligent digital platforms for urban management systems such as street furniture controllers, IoT and smart city enterprise management together with Alibaba Cloud.”

For Alibaba Cloud, the collaboration is the company’s latest initiative as it continues to empower the local technology partners in Malaysia. Back in 2017, Alibaba Cloud set up its first Malaysian-based data centre to provide local companies of all sizes with the option of building their businesses and running their applications on its public cloud platform.

A second data centre was then launched to extend the company’s cloud footprint, and Alibaba Cloud’s first cloud-based Anti-DDoS Scrubbing Centre was established in Malaysia last year to better protect its customers against rising DDoS attacks and further enhance the infrastructure required to support Malaysia’s digital economy.
