Construction companies can leverage on big data to come up with better cost estimates and the outcomes on projects, says Works Minister Baru Bian.

He said such a technology would allow the industry players to make strategic calls through data-driven decision making, in order to increase productivity, enhance safety at construction sites and reduce business risks.

“New technologies throughout the ages have enabled builders to construct bigger and better buildings with higher quality and efficiency.

“Technologies like 3D printing; building information modelling (BIM); and integration of design and off-site component-based assembly such as the Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) are evolving faster these days,” he said in his keynote address at the Statistics, Indices in Construction and Automation (SICA) Forum 2018 here yesterday.

His speech text was read out by Deputy Works Minister Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir.

The two-day forum, organised by the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) with the theme ‘Building a Big Data Community for Construction in Malaysia’, focuses on the topics of Leveraging Big Data in the Construction Industry as well as Identifying Construction Trends with Data Analytics.

Meanwhile, CIDB Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Mohd Ali said the efforts of fostering a big data community were in line with the Construction Industry Transformation Programme’s goal to take the industry to become modern, highly productive and sustainable.
