Big data is the future: expert

Increasing volume and details of information captured by various organisations, multimedia, social media, and Internet of Things will fuel exponential growth in big data, according to Advisor to Department of Science and Technology-initiated Big Data Initiatives K.R. Murali Mohan. During a special lecture on the topic at a three-day seminar organised at GITAM University, he said there was a foreseeable future in data science and big data analytics.

Mr. Murali Mohan, who is also heading DST-Big Data Initiative Division, observed that data scientists were highest paid professionals in the U.S. and 70 per cent of startups were based on big data and data analytics.

He informed that after forecasting the opportunities in this specialisation, China concentrated on data science and started training programmes for their student community under the guidance of NIT experts.

The expert also informed about the aim of National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), which was recently launched by the DST with an estimated cost of Rs.4,500 crore. Indian Institute of Science-Bangalore Computer Science Department professor M. Narasimha Murthi said big data analytics would play a key role in health, education, agriculture, and energy sectors in the country. GITAM president M.V.V.S. Murthi said the university was planning to establish a research centre on big data analytics with the help of DST and IISc to train students as well as to help the local government.
