Chief Evangelist for APJ at Nutanix, Paul Serrano, was at the Big Indonesia event held on the 23rd of March 2017 in Jakarta to share his knowledge and expertise on Big Data Analytics. Big Community, who were there as the organisers of the event, was able have a quick chat with him on Nutanix activities in the region so far and specifically in Indonesia.

Paul shares that Nutanix has been shipping products to the region for approximately 5 years and specifically to Indonesia for approximately the last 2 years.

“Nutanix provides scalability, cost effectiveness, ease of management and a host of other facilities for cloud adoption that you similarly see from Google, AWS or Azure”, he explained. “The difference between the platforms offered by those companies and Nutanix is that you have to purchase it from them as a service and the data will remain on their premise.”

He added that these technologies are great for high performance, pay-on-demand, horizontal and vertical scalability as well as ease of management type concepts. However, if the customer would like to have the data stored on their own facility and they want to own the applications or perhaps are worried about having their data on a public cloud platform, then Nutanix could be a possible option for them.

“That’s really the genesis of what Nutanix is all about. The technology that we bring within the cloud is through Hyperconverged Infrastructure or commonly known as HCI. That would essentially be a stepping stone to what a cloud actually is. We do this by collapsing technologies to make them very compact,” he shared.

An interesting analogy how this works is of an iphone combining numerous technologies into one, such as the camera, the cell phone, a messaging system and various applications. By converging all those technologies together, it makes them smaller and much more easier to manage on a single user interface.

“That’s exactly what Nutanix Enterprise Cloud would combine by taking storage computer networking, intergrate them together, make them smaller easier to manage and cheaper to deploy. Typically, HCI, is the integration component which will reduce the current infrastructures of storage computer networking by as much as 50 – 90% which is a substantial reduction in physical footprint”, he added.

By reducing hardware infrastructure, Nutanix is able to lower costs such as electricity to air-conditioning, much less complexity since there are fewer components, as well as savings in scalability and therefore offering clients a need-to-purchase-only option and scale up at any time in the future.

He shared that with this shift in technology, they are looking at more adoption to cloud environment within the next 5 to 6 years where existing data centers will evolve into cloud data centers.

Nutanix also offers hybrid capability for public cloud on their platform and seamlessly move workloads from the private cloud, to the public cloud in certain required situations and vice-versa.

“As we can see from this very popular event, Big Data concerns, applications getting bigger and how technologies under the umbrella of Enterprise Cloud is a very important component for the country”.

Paul shared that in the next phase of virtualisation, micro-segmentation will become an integral part of virtualised protection.

“How do I protect my applications that are now virtualised in the background, because as we know, once you break into the background of your data center, you can wreak havoc. There isn’t really any security across those domains,” he added.

He explains that there are north and south securities such as Symantec and Checkpoint. However the need now will be to secure between virtual machines and between workloads. He believes that Nutanix by nature being very virtualised, gives them a leading edge into the space of micro-segmentation and to address this issue properly.
