Did you realise that mobile apps such as “Slice”, “Boomerang,” and “HubSpot” are given permission to view your emails? Now ask yourself, how many of your employees use their smartphones to access corporate email, and how many of them have apps installed to read that email?
We don’t often think about it but it’s a frightening possibility. What if they take that data and sell it to a third-party company for profit?
In the past year, remote work has become a feasible option to spend the entire day at the workplace. Employees become even more interested in mobile technologies as a result of this. Why? Because even basic smartphones can perform email, voice chat, and videoconferencing.
An article from Homeland Security Today noted that the shift to remote work during the pandemic resulted in 47% of companies reporting an increase in the use of personal devices for work. While the usage of personal devices has helped organisations increase employee productivity and satisfaction while also lowering costs, challenges with device access and mobile security still exist.
In fact, the most serious issue mentioned in the article was data leakage or loss (62%). Users downloading risky apps or content (54%), lost or stolen devices (53%), and unauthorised access to company data and systems were among the other concerns (51%).
The use of personal devices or “BYOD” is now more prevalent in the workforce than just a few years ago. Despite its benefits, BYOD places additional responsibilities on IT departments, which must maintain the devices as well as ensure that the practice does not introduce unnecessary vulnerabilities to the company network and data.
According to Digital Guardian, the worldwide BYOD industry will reach over USD $350 billion by 2022 (up from USD $94 billion in 2014), with a major increase projected between 2020 and 2026. Increased smartphone demand and employees’ desire to complete work-related duties such as sending emails even while they’re not in the office are driving this growth.
Despite these issues, it doesn’t mean companies should try to eliminate BYOD practices. Instead, they should work on establishing BYOD policies and security measures to make the practice safer. Most businesses would benefit from embracing the BYOD trend and capitalising on the flexibility and benefits it provides, while also taking security measures to limit the risks associated.
All this can be accomplished by leveraging VMware Workspace ONE. Workspace ONE is a digital platform that delivers and manages any app on any device, by merging access control, application management, and unified endpoint management. The platform enables IT to create a digital workspace with the business’s preferred devices and apps while maintaining the security and control that IT professionals need.
With Workspace ONE, users may access protected company information while on the go. Employees can take advantage of the following features:
- Adaptive management designed to maximise adoption even among the most privacy-sensitive employees: Employees may easily embrace BYOD programmes by determining what level of access and management they want to utilise with the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub app, which offers adaptive management.
- Advanced email attachment security: Secure email and attachments with the AirWatch Secure Email Gateway, which uses corporate encryption, wipe, and open-in controls to keep attachments safe.
- Device management and compliance: With real-time, ongoing device compliance checks, only the right devices have access to data. Workspace ONE uses UEM technology to ensure that devices on rooted or jailbroken devices follow IT policies like whitelisting and blacklisting apps, open-in app restrictions, and other policies enforced by the AirWatch policy engine.
Designed for business users, Workspace ONE gives users seamless, secure access to the apps, tools, and material they need to get work done from anywhere.
