Coming to an estate near you: An electric vehicle (EV) charging station by ComfortDelGro (CDG) and French energy giant ENGIE.
Joint bids by both companies recently emerged winners in three of five tender regions for EV chargers that are to be installed over 200 public carparks Islandwide. In total, CDG-ENGIE won 479 of the 632 chargers slated for introduction next year, representing 75% of the chargers in this pilot rollout. The chargers, comprising 192 x 22kW AC chargers, 279 x 7kW AC chargers and 8 x 50kW DC chargers, will be installed in the Central, East and West regions of Singapore.
Installation will begin before the end of this year and is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2022.
The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) tender was keenly contested with a total of 19 bids submitted. It marks the first step in the SG Green Plan 2030 which aims to have 60,000 charging points nationwide.
Yang Ban Seng, MD and Group CEO at ComfortDelGro, said: “This is a major win for the partnership between ComfortDelGro and ENGIE in the area of EV charging and we are excited to be given the opportunity to offer our expertise to bolster EV adoption in the local transport industry. We will work hand in hand with ENGIE to populate the island with EV charging stations, bringing green energy to the masses”.
ENGIE Southeast Asia CEO, Mr Thomas Baudlot, echoed this sentiment, saying: “We are very excited to take our partnership with ComfortDelGro to the next level and together contribute to Singapore’s journey to sustainability. Leveraging on ENGIE’s global track record in green mobility and low carbon energy solutions, we wish to provide all Singaporeans who are eager to switch to electric vehicles with clean and affordable electricity”.
Beyond this tender, ComfortDelGro and ENGIE are also looking at building EV charging farms on ComfortDelGro’s premises. These charging farms, some of which will be powered by renewable energy, will offer fast charging solutions to cabbies and public users. This is in line with ComfortDelGro’s announcement that it is committing $50 million in clean energy technology and research, which include transitioning towards a clean-energy fleet, improving energy efficiency, adopting renewables and driving business innovation for the next five years.
ComfortDelGro also has plans to add more EVs into its fleets, and was the first to commercialise its DC fast charging station on its premise on 13 November 2018. It added a second fast charging station in June last year.
