Mellanox Technologies, a leading supplier of end-to-end Ethernet and InfiniBand intelligent interconnect solutions and services for servers, storage, and hyper-converged infrastructure, has officially launched its presence in Malaysia in its bid to expand throughout South East Asia.
The expansion comes as Malaysia’s own initiatives have seen tremendous growth and efforts by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation, MDEC, to world class technology corporations to venture into the country. Malaysia’s footprint has expanded to include 42 locations across the country, hosting more than 3,800 companies from more than 40 countries, employing more than 150,000 high-income knowledge workers, 85 percent which are Malaysians. This has propelled Malaysia to a top three ranking in AT Kearney’s Global Services Location Index since 2005, with only China and India ahead of Malaysia.
Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific Japan, Charlie Foo sees Malaysia’s investment initiatives in Big Data Analytics as impressive. “With a year-over-year growth of more than 20 percent in the last five years, the field of digital data management is maturing rapidly. Mellanox’s investment in Malaysia looks to complement Malaysia’s advancing digital economy by providing intelligent 10, 25, 40, 50 and 100Gb/s interconnect solutions that serve today’s and future needs in Malaysia. This will enable organizations to be less concerned about today’s technological demands while concentrating on running their business, resulting in unparalleled operating efficiency for these organizations.”
Mellanox Technologies provides for the worlds fastest interconnect infrastructure and is currently being used in China on the fastest computer in the world.
“We believe this is the time for the engines in Asia to get fired up. We believe that we will hit our inflection point in under 2 to 3 years,” he added, saying that their focus will be on investing and not on ROI for the time being.
Hoong Mun Loong, their recent addition as Country Manager for Malaysia, with 20 years experience in the space, says Malaysia is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. They will be working to build the infrastructure necessary to bring Malaysia to the next level.
“There is tremendous growth in Malaysia’s digital economy. This, in turn, has sparked optimistic growth opportunities in Malaysia as organizations are embarking on their journey toward digital transformation, improving customer centricity and building elastic Cloud infrastructure,” said Hong. “As organizations evolve alongside this digital transformation, so too will demands from technology. These demands will require the ability to move growing amounts of data faster, and to gain data insights in real time.”
Also present at the event this afternoon was Senior Director of Market Development APAC for Beijing Mellanox Technologies, Tong Liu. He explained in more detail on the workings of their technology.
“We are able to deliver high speed interconnection within the data centre and this makes a lot of difference for Big Data Analytics. The technology we use is able to reduce CPU processing by 20% as the switches we provide are not only able to send data very fast, but they are also smart switches. The switches are able to distinguish between the data and allocate which data goes where,” he explained, adding that the components are also used for data storage.
“Because of this, companies who need to process data and information for their big data insights and analytics are able to lower their costs as they will not need as much legacy storage for their infrastructure,” he said.
Mellanox make their own adaptors, switches, cables and software which are able to combine with any legacy infrastructure and this he said makes it easy for companies to adopt their technology into their businesses.
“We are going to be changing our systems from CPU centric to Data Centric to be able to cope with the speed and volume of data that has been growing with the technologies like IoT, Machine Learning and AI. This technology will increase performance of the data centre to up to 25X”, he said.
With data growing by 50% every year, CPU processing will be the bottleneck for scaling up. Having the ability to offload algorithms that overlap computation and data processing will make it possible to achieve the necessary speeds in this digital economy.
