Cloudera has recognised Malaysia as one of its key player in leveraging the value of open source big data analytics.
With the head office in Singapore, Cloudera has been operating in Malaysia for two months with Victor Ng as the Country Manger. “We are looking forward to establish an office in Malaysia with local staff soon” Victor told the media during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Speaking of IDC’s global market reports, Cloudera will be releasing a IDC style report focusing on APAC and Malaysia by the end of March. According to Cloudera’s Senior Director Daniel Ng, the report will concentrate less on the market side but rather on Malaysia’s level of engagement within big data technology in South East Asia.

What’s behind Big Data?
According to Daniel, Big Data is an invention of big hardware companies to make sure that you buy big storage to make big profit.

Today’s organisation have stored a lot of data. “The question really is what you’re going to do with these data? What if you could analyse data and what do you want to achieve?” He also added “Companies don’t really care about data and data analytics; they care about making big decisions based on analytics. This is where Cloudera comes in, helping organisations derive value from all their data”.

Areas where Cloudera have done businesses 

Modern Platform – Data can solve world’s biggest problems
Speaking of driving businesses forward with modern platform and data management, Daniel stated that “for communities and developers in Malaysia to build big data application on the Apache Hadoop platform using the latest open source tools, it’s available – simply because it’s an open source. You can just download it and develop it and maybe you are the next Cloudera in the big data analytics world coming out of Malaysia”.

Differentiation of Cloudera with reference to the other implementation of Hadoop is the market place, Daniel has described Cloudera’s One Platform strategy as the solution to the “Frankenstein way of pinning things together where it grows into a monster hard to manage”. He further emphasises on the security. “Our security provides comprehensive encryption, key management and access control so that users’ data are protected on the Cloudera enterprise data hub platform”.

Cloudera in Malaysia
Cloudera is partnering with many companies. “In Malaysia, we have collaborated with companies such as Fusionex and training company Iverson”. The technology is not simple to handle; therefore, we need data professions who can decipher what comes out from data. For instance, as Malaysia is in a very advantageous position in becoming a data science hub, MDeC is playing a major role in accomplishing the goal. Being multicultural, Malaysians have an advantage, as there are a large number of multilingual certified IT professionals in the country who are able to communicate with businesses around the world.

Daniel announced that on April 13th Cloudera will have an interesting initiative in collaboration with MDeC aimed to help develop Malaysian data professionals. The father of Hadoop, Doug Cutting is expected to be in Malaysia during the MDeC collaboration announcement.
