Without a doubt, in recent years there have been two very important technologies that have revolutionised the world of business; cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI). The IBM Cloud and Data Summit taking place on 25th April at the Shangri-la Hotel, Kuala Lumpur will be exploring these two areas in detail. As a precursor to this event, we have decided to take a look at how prevalent these technologies are in businesses today.
While just a few years ago the common question used to be, “Should my business make use of the cloud?” Now, the answer is a resounding yes! Cloud computing has evolved and matured to become a vital platform that provides a myriad of tools necessary to drive a lot of the digital transformation initiatives we see today. So much so that one study on the future of cloud predicts that up to 83% of enterprise workloads will be in the cloud while on-premise workloads are predicted to shrink from 37% today to 27% by 2020.
When it comes to enterprise IT, the cloud has truly changed the game in terms of making the latest and most advanced technologies accessible and affordable to businesses of any size, not just major corporations. These include technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), high-performance computing, blockchain and AI.
This factor has probably contributed to the accelerated growth of adoption of AI that we are seeing in the enterprise space today. According to the Deloitte’s State of AI in the Enterprise report, the majority of respondents considered enterprise software with AI “baked in” and cloud-based AI as the easiest paths for them to acquire various AI and cognitive capabilities for business.
In order to build sophisticated AI and machine learning models themselves, companies would typically need to make significant investments in terms of infrastructure (the system must be able to provide the computational power required and scale the machine learning workloads effectively) and specialised staff to build, train, and deploy machine learning models.
The cloud allows companies to side-step these issues, giving them access to immense computing power and scalable storage space to handle the most compute- and data-intensive machine learning and deep learning processes at a more affordable pay-as-you-use pricing model. Furthermore, they can also leverage pre-trained models to further accelerate their AI application developments or simply choose cloud-based services that are already pre-packed with AI capabilities.
Thus, cloud computing has truly democratised AI. Businesses that can harness the power of both of these technologies and reap their benefits stand a much greater chance of success in the digital economy.
If you’re interested in finding out how you can scale your business and accelerate your digital transformation with AI and cloud, you cannot miss the IBM Cloud & Data Forum 2019, which will be held at Kuala Lumpur on the 25th of April 2019. You’ll be able to hear industry insights from IBM experts and real-life case studies with separate tracks focusing on helping you on your “journey to the cloud” and “journey to data & AI”.
