Huawei Explores 5G Innovations for Beyond Telecom Industries

Huawei Founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei in a recent interview with global media in China revealed the company’s path of exploring new opportunities in industrial 5G applications across sectors such as mining, transportation, and music among others, emphasizing on Huawei’s continued focus on its innovation and core business to provide basic platforms for diverse industries in the 5G era.

Elaborating on Huawei’s focus to use ICT solutions to help legacy industries innovate, Mr. Ren Zhengfei said, “In 5G era, connecting businesses is the main goal. While the 5G applications for different industries are different, but most of the technologies are the same. So our main goal is to increase the adoption of electronic, software, and computing systems in different industries.”

The key to accelerating this development will be Huawei’s longstanding commitment and investment into basic research and innovation. According to Mr. Ren, Huawei has built more than 100 research centers and joint labs around the world specializing in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and aesthetics, developing 5G applications and ICT solutions for a thriving ecosystem of smart cities, autonomous vehicles, smart: education; healthcare; mining etc. These Innovation Labs are co-partnered with customers who provide insights and expertise to direct the research as per requirements of their respective industries while Huawei expertise in electronics technology helps develop great applications and services for these industries.

Under joint cooperation with industry customers and partners, Huawei has helped build the 5G networks and digital connections across cities globally such as Berlin, Seoul, Bangkok and Riyadh. These networks have proven their industry leading capabilities by enabling seamless connectivity and peak performance for high-end devices operating across the networks.

Today, as the leading global ICT solutions provider, Huawei continues to offer best in class products and solutions to its customers. Huawei began researching 5G technology in 2009, and by the end of 2019, it had submitted 26,600 standards contributions to the 3GPP. According to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the company owns 4,348 families of 5G essential patents, accounting for over 20% of the total. This places Huawei first among all vendors in terms of 5G patents, laying a solid foundation for its R&D prospects and innovative applications of 5G into a diverse range of industries.
