“The 18th century was the machine age. The 19th century was the electrical age. The 20th century was the information age. I think the 21st century will be a fully intelligent one for the society,” said Dr Zhou Hong, President of Huawei’s Institute of Strategic Research at the recently concluded Huawei Global Analyst Summit 2022.

He stated that everything we imagine now is going to be too conservative – too little – for tomorrow. And that we must approach the future with daring hypotheses and a bold vision, throwing caution to the wind as we work to break past theoretical and technological bottlenecks.

In his keynote speech, Dr Zhou outlined ten challenges that Huawei aims to address in the future:

  • How do machines perceive the world, and can we build models that teach machines how to understand the world?
  • How can we better understand the physiological mechanisms of the human body, including how the eight systems of the body work, as well as human intent and intelligence?
  • New sensing and control capabilities, e.g., brain-computer interfaces, muscle-computer interfaces, 3D displays, virtual touch, virtual smell, and virtual taste.
  • Real-time, unobtrusive blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart monitoring, and strong AI-assisted discoveries in chemical pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, and vaccines.
  • Application-centric, efficient, automated, and intelligent software for greater value and a better experience.
  • Reaching and circumventing Shannon’s limit to enable efficient, high-performance connectivity both regionally and globally.
  • Adaptive and efficient computing models, non-Von Neumann architectures, unconventional components, and explainable and debuggable AI.
  • Inventing new molecules, catalysts, and components with intelligent computing.
  • Developing new processes that surpass CMOS, cost less, and are more efficient.
  • Safe, efficient energy conversion and storage, as well as on-demand services.

He added that Huawei is innovating with partners all across the world with an open mind. Recently, Huawei has launched the virtual Chaspark, which will serve as an open forum for people to share their thoughts on science and technology.

“Through Chaspark, we will put together the most pressing challenges in the ICT industry and keep attracting the world’s best minds so that we can take a crack at these challenges together,” added Dr Zhou.

Greener, Intelligent World

Technology has had a significant impact on how we live and work. And we’ve been seeing it for the past few years. Many changes have occurred, and it all began with a strong vision and imagination. Then, all of a sudden, it became a reality.

That is the approach that Huawei is taking.

At the event, Ken Hu, Huawei’s Rotating Chairman, gave a keynote on Huawei’s approach to innovation and building a greener intelligent world. When Huawei talks about innovation, the first thing that comes to mind, according to Hu, is people. Huawei aspires to attract world-class talent with world-class challenges and to collaborate to push science and technology to new heights.

Hu then went on to talk about the specific efforts Huawei is working on to realise its future vision. Huawei is currently focusing on three areas: Improving their innovation strategy, providing all industries with the tools and expertise they need to go digital, and assisting in the development of a low-carbon world.

The following is a summary of these three initiatives.

Innovating Non-stop and Advancing the Industry:

  • In terms of connectivity, Huawei is bringing 10 Gbps everywhere with 5.5G and F5.5G.
  • Redefining architectures to breakthrough computing bottlenecks.
  • Building MetaStudio, a cloud-based, end-to-end digital content pipeline that will significantly speed up digital content creation.
  • In terms of devices, Huawei aims to give users a user-centric intelligent experience in all parts of their lives, dubbed the Seamless AI Life experience.

Creating new Value for Customers With Digital Transformation:

  • Huawei is tailoring its products and portfolios to various industrial settings. Simultaneously, it will begin pre-integrating and pre-verifying products, doing all of the difficult work ahead of time to make digital transformation easier for customers and partners.
  • Huawei is also forming integrated teams focused on certain industries, bringing a specialised set of experts closer to customers’ business concerns and merging horizontal resources, such as partner products and capabilities, more tightly.

Optimising Power Supply and Consumption With Digital Technology to Enable Low-Carbon Development:

  • Huawei is revolutionising the PV industry with AI, the cloud, and other capabilities to increase renewable energy generation.
  • Huawei is also working on low-carbon system-level solutions for green ICT infrastructure, with an emphasis on wireless base stations and data centres.

Moving forward, Huawei is taking active steps to boost its business resilience and ensure steady development. “We believe that the only way to keep the ball rolling is through non-stop innovation, and the only way to do that is to collaborate with our customers, and partners across different industries,” Ken Hu stated. “We hope to continue working with you and to see your support so that through our combined efforts, we can build a better and greener intelligent world.”
