Huawei Technologies has brought the Huawei Spark programme to Malaysia. Huawei Spark aims to incubate and accelerate a company’s growth and build an ecosystem for businesses in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.

Launched in collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation’s (MDEC) Global Acceleration and Innovation Network programme (GAIN) and powered by TM ONE, through its α Edge (pronounced as Alpha Edge) Cloud platform, Hybrid Spark is a hybrid accelerator programme to support deep tech companies in APAC. It focuses on firms that use 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning & Analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), Edge Computing and Software as a Service (SaaS) applications that are leveraging on Huawei’s technological and innovation leadership.

Michael Yuan, Huawei Malaysia CEO, said the program will allow startups and businesses to team up with industry experts to get more advice and mentoring on how they can build up their business and solutions. This includes the deep tech hybrid accelerator program from the incubation process.

Dato’ Ng Wan Peng, Chief Operating Officer of MDEC, said the Huawei Spark programme will provide local tech companies with the opportunity to gain financial support, test their go-to-market strategies and connect with mentors, among others.

In his presentation during the launch, Leo Nuo Jiang, Chief Digital Officer of Huawei Cloud and AI for APAC, said Huawei Spark brings along several value propositions for startups and entrepreneurs. They include tech support, financial support, go to market support, training and resources, mentoring and networking and SparkFire.

SparkFire is designed to boost company business size and create business awareness through three key initiatives. They include:

  • Provide opportunities to sell to Huawei with annual revenue of USD$ 123 billion in 2019;
  • Sell with Huawei through the access of 197 of Fortune 500 companies; and
  • Sell through Huawei’s App store and Cloud marketplace, which provides access to 600 million Huawei mobile users.

In a panel discussion at launch, Mohamed Rejab Sulaiman, General Manager of Data Centre for Cloud and Internet at TM ONE, said Malaysian businesses are seeing more new trends this year. For example, enterprises prefer hybrid cloud and are eyeing towards backup and disaster recovery as a service. He also mentioned that there has also been an increase in the use of IoT and cloud in both the manufacturing and agriculture industry.

The challenge he believes most startups and businesses will face is not about creating innovative solutions; it’s more about the acceptance of newer technologies by businesses. And this is where the Huawei Spark programme may be able to help most.
