IBM Indonesia, the local branch of United States-based multinational technology company IBM, announced that it has joined hands with University of Indonesia to run a big data and cognitive computing course, in an effort to improve and popularize the understanding of data analytics in the country.

Students of the Faculty of Economics and Business can sign up for the course, which IBM Indonesia will be running for the next five years.

The classes, which started on Feb. 14, are attended by more than 100 students. Technology and industry experts from IBM participated in the course as guest lecturers.

According to IBM’s report titled “Cognitive Advantage Global Market,” published in 2016, cognitive computing is one of the keys to accelerate business growth. It can support and improve customer interaction, productivity and business efficiency.

“Cognitive computing is a new era of computing, and we have seen a rising demand for it across industries. Our partnership with University of Indonesia to run the first class in this subject is part of our commitment to prepare the younger generations for a new era of technology,” IBM Indonesia said in a statement.

Accounting chair at the faculty, Ancella A. Hermawan, said the course was initiated by the faculty to improve the competence of its graduates.

“We feel it is important to equip students with the knowledge of data analytics and big data, so we decided to work with IT industry leaders such as IBM,” she said.
