If You Don’t Collect and Analyse Your IoT Data, You Better Start Now

The idea of batch processing when it comes to data for analytics is all but redundant. Even more so, collecting data from edge devices in batch fashion is an absolute “no”. In today’s world, edge devices are also connected devices. They form the Internet of Things (IoT), delivering data in real-time from sources that were not possible just a few short years ago. Increasingly, business value comes from making decisions in real-time from data collected from the edge, also in real-time.

Whether it is sensors on an oil rig to help improve safety and drive efficiency, data from planes to improve fuel consumption and reduce accident risks, or sensors on bins to drive efficiency in refuse collection, the data collected by edge devices is valuable and can be used to make by-the-moment decisions to improve the business process.

In today’s world, keeping your IoT devices idle or ignoring the data collected is a “costly affair”. The oft-made adage that “data is the new oil” may be somewhat overused but it remains true. Perhaps less used is the idea that “real-time data is the new crude oil”. Every bit and byte of real-time data is valuable and bears significant monetary value. It should not be allowed to stream to anywhere that would be the metaphorical equivalent of an oil slick.

Henceforth, we need a good strategy in managing and manipulating the data streamed from IoT devices. An integrated platform to collect, analyse and execute the raw IoT data into actionable intelligence will serve the purpose for business acceleration. The tangible problems in this flow would be the capability of the platform to collect the unstructured data and manage the I/O of data veracity. These kinds of problems can be easily solved with the Cloudera Data Platform (CDP), powered by Apache NiFi and MiNiFi, and integrated with engines to handle data veracity, like Apache Kafka and Storm. This combination of technologies is the best bet against an avalanche of real-time streaming data and deep analytics requirements accommodating the ‘3V’s – Veracity, Velocity and Volume of big data generated by IoTs.

The beauty of an integrated platform such as CDP lies in its agility to provide a holistic solution to supercharge the real-time analytics of data in motion from connected IoT devices, edge applications and streaming sources. Any vertical industry that is required to handle unstructured real-time data with 3Vs such as supply chain, finance, security, energy and many more can focus on the change management policy and process to implement the business changes that can be derived from this platform. Organisations that conservatively hinge on subjective superlatives as reasons to implement business changes can now rely on real-time logical analytics. We can look forward to very objective and discreet business change management processes happening autonomously with the help of an integrated big data processing platform like Cloudera Data Platform.

While it’s interesting to know the benefits of IoT data streaming and processing for providers, users or consumers, on the other hand, benefit from individualised customisations and speed of the services rendered. Customers will feel the difference in the personalisation of the services provided to them and sense that they are appreciated by the providers – and all of this happening with the economy of scale rather than huge investments that are required for dealing with operational complexities, logistic challenges and bandwidth constraints!
