In our second part of our interview with Gooi Soon Chai, President of Electronic Industrial Solutions Group, Keysight Technologies, he explains to us how Keysight is involved with 5G technology and how businesses can manage the cost of this technology post-COVID-19.
“At Keysight, we engage in many facets of accelerating 5G innovation. We participate in the development of the wireless standards in organizations like 3GPP – the standards organization that develops protocols for mobile telephony. We have contributed more to the development of the 5G NR standard than any other test vendor, with more than 400 RAN4 and RAN5 5G NR contributions.”
Keysight’s industry-first 5G solutions have played an instrumental role in accelerating the first wave of 5G smartphones. By providing early access to key design and test capabilities, we have enabled more than a dozen device makers to launch commercial 5G phones.
“Our 5G solutions enable the mobile industry to innovate game-changing products that address the needs of different vertical industries. We provide tools for the ecosystem from Layer 1 to Layer 7 and across the workflow from research to deployment and optimization.
We partner with leaders across the 5G ecosystem––with chipset companies, device designers, network equipment manufacturers, and mobile network operators––to make sure that we are pushing the boundaries of measurement solutions to validate and accelerate their designs as they push the boundaries of technology innovation.”
Keysight plays a key role in accelerating deployments in all key markets by collaborating in trials and enabling leading mobile operators across the globe to commercialise early 5G technology.
According to Gooi, Keysight has registered triple-digit growth in their 5G business and placed experts where customers are and where 5G advancements are happening. The organisation’s R&D, application engineering, and support centres are spread strategically across the globe to address customers all over the world, while their primary manufacturing and order fulfilment location is in Penang, Malaysia.
International and locally-established examples of companies we are now partnering with include all the key chipset makers – most recently, Qualcomm Technologies to accelerate small cell deployment supported by 5G virtualised radio access network (vRAN) architecture, and Samsung Electronics’ LSI Business – a global leader in semiconductor components and 5G technology, to validate dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology used in the smartphone maker’s new 5G modem.
“We have also collaborated extensively with leading operators and institutions like Verizon, China Telecom, China Telecommunications Technology Laboratory, DEKRA, Hisense Communication, Nokia, NTT Docomo, OPPO, Rakuten, Sprint, VIOMI amongst others. Our collaborations across the 5G ecosystem help accelerate 5G innovation by bringing early access to insights to our customers.”
An affordable technology post-COVID-19?
5G can realise huge economies of scale for operators and greatly increase capacity for their customers – particularly in light of the surge in e-commerce and work-from-home from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gooi agreed that while the pandemic might affect the rate at which different industry sectors adopt 5G technologies in their businesses, they may have to make adjustments depending on their financial situation. Many businesses now see digital transformation as a means of survival rather than just a smart strategy.
“Keysight focuses on delivering innovative test and measurement solutions that help operators, chipmakers, device makers and other participants in the 5G ecosystem that keep costs down and deliver the expected efficiencies and economies of scale.”
Staying on COVID-19, Gooi will share with us how the pandemic is having an impact on the development and implementation of 5G.
