DTA was invited to Huawei’s Customer Solution Integration and Innovation Experience Centre in Kuala Lumpur for a tour and briefing on some of their technology offerings to Malaysia and the region. Highlighting some of their latest innovations in 5G, Wi-Fi 6, smart city applications, IoT devices and enterprise storage, Huawei has indeed come a long way in Malaysia since they first started operations here in 2001.
While countries around the world are still deciding on which 5G provider to work with, Huawei has well established itself in Malaysia for ensuring 5G services are ready to be deployed. The tech company has been involved with the software and infrastructure roll-out in the country and have partnered with numerous telco companies across Malaysia.
Speaking to DTA, Huawei said that all that remains is for the spectrum licensing to be finalised. Once that is completed, they will be working with several telco providers (TM, Axiata, Maxis, etc.) to roll-out the technology in different stages.
Upon successful trial sessions earlier this year in Langkawi, Huawei believes that Malaysians, be it consumers or enterprises are eagerly awaiting to see the full potential of this technology.
When it comes to the installation of the 5G infrastructure, telco companies just need to add in an additional device on each tower in the areas they wish to expand 5G into. Most telco towers are already in their installation phase of these components.
Interestingly, Huawei said there are many potential use cases for 5G in Malaysia. The consumer market is expected to be the biggest users of 5G, be it for gaming or video communication, applications today require connectivity to be at its strongest and Huawei feels Malaysians will be willing to pay a bit extra for faster service.
For enterprises, there are many use cases as well. However, Huawei feels that most of these use cases are only on a trial basis and businesses are still looking to see the full potential of 5G. The manufacturing industry, for example, is expected to be one of the largest beneficiaries from 5G when it comes to automation and if they intend to embark towards IR4.0.
A recent MoU between Huawei, Sunway Group and Axiata also saw the three companies working together on smart city use cases in Sunway City. This includes using 5G for retail, education, transportation and even medical. Trials are already underway and the first use case is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
To sum it all up, Huawei wants to be the enabler for 5G in Malaysia. They have done their part and now it all depends on when regulators will make the spectrum available. Some believe it may be soon but many only feel that we might only see this next year.
