The Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) together with their strategic partners: Transport Ministry, Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad, Syarikat WRZiT, are once again at the helm in raising the nation’s global Open Data Readiness Assessment (ODRA) ranking.

The Big Splash Open Data event will be held tomorrow, the 25th of May at the Dewan Tunku Canselor Universiti Malaya, to award the government agencies who were most active in contributing to the open data sets and raising the data sets from 1,336 to 1,982.

The Big Splash Open Data event also commemorates the Open Data Day 2017 which will be officiated by the YAB Deputy Prime Minister, follow by the launching of Big Splash montage. The honourable guests will then be ushered for a ride in a RapidKL double-decker bus tour to explore the open data applications mobile innovation called WRZiT.

WRZiT is a public bus ETA app developed to improve the user experience of public transportation. It will share location information of public buses in real time through passenger interaction. Data retrieved from the passengers will help the accuracy of the information provided showcasing the positive impact technology has on public transport.

It works by letting riders create real-time arrival information by sharing GPS traces while commuting to their destination. Once a customer is ready to board and has located a nearby bus stop and service routes, they can launch the app that will automatically display the available buses nearest to them. The app can run in the phones background and it will notify the user once the bus is about to reach the destination.

Passengers can contribute to the app in a few ways such as reporting crowd levels in the bus or share outbound trips while simultaneously being informed of upcoming stops.

YAB Deputy Prime Minister will present appreciation certificates to the Open Data Champions for their role and contribution in spearheading the innovation to drive the open data initiatives. Approximately 800 participants from the public sector, private or industry, academician, students and public personnel are expected to grace the event as well.
