Maxis has partnered with property developer IJM Perennial Development Sdn Bhd (IJM Perennial) and GlobalComm Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (GlobalComm), a leading provider of telecommunications infrastructure and IT services, to deliver integrated mobile and fixed connectivity to Penang’s latest iconic waterfront mixed-use development – The Light City.
IJM Perennial, the master developer of The Light City, is a joint venture between IJM Corporation Berhad and Perennial Holdings Private Limited.
Maxis will also collaborate with IJM Perennial and GlobalComm to develop smart city solutions powered by 5G-Advanced and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. These innovations will equip The Light City to be a future-ready development for its residents and businesses.
The partnership was formalised at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ceremony held recently at The Light City, in the presence of YAB Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang.
Goh Seow Eng, Chief Executive Officer of Maxis, said, “We’re pleased to partner with IJM Perennial and GlobalComm Telecommunications to provide mobile and fixed connectivity as well as solutions powered by 5G-Advanced and Internet of Things (IoT) technology for this future-ready smart city project. As Malaysia’s leading integrated telco, we are committed to providing fast, secure, and reliable connectivity. Our partnership positions The Light City at the forefront of technology, facilitating the adoption of innovative applications and services, and enhancing the overall living and working experience for the residents and businesses of this iconic development.”
Lee Chun Fai, Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of IJM Corporation Berhad, representing IJM Perennial Development Sdn Bhd said, “The Light City reflects IJM’s commitment to thoughtful urban development that meets the evolving needs of our community. By partnering with Maxis and GlobalComm Telecommunications, we are equipping The Light City with essential 5G-ready infrastructure, ensuring robust connectivity that not only strengthens its position as a hub for business and leisure but also future-proofs the state’s digital infrastructure and aligns with the government’s digitalisation objectives.”
Stuart Kang, Managing Director of GlobalComm Telecommunications Sdn Bhd said, “We are excited to be part of this project and combining our expertise with that of Maxis to deliver unparalleled connectivity to The Light City. This partnership reinforces our commitment to providing comprehensive connectivity solutions, catering to the diverse ICT requirements of communities and development projects in the country.”
Slated for phased completion starting in Q1 2025, The Light City will feature Penang’s largest convention centre, the state’s biggest waterfront mall, international hotels, commercial and office towers, and luxury high-rise residences. The Light City is poised to be one of the catalysts for Penang’s economic growth, attracting both domestic and international visitors.
This partnership is the latest milestone in Maxis’ ongoing initiatives to support Penang’s digitalisation and connectivity agenda. Maxis has previously partnered with the Penang state government on digital skills development and education, and with Digital Penang to drive digital adoption among the state’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
