Malaysian animation IP creators are fast becoming a worldwide phenomenon with cartoonist gaining international popularity with export growth as much as 52% as compared with local use of 12%. The cartoonist were recently recognised for their achievements at the MYKIDS Content Creators celebration with MDEC and YouTube Kids.
Cartoons such as Upin & Ipin and BoBoiBoy are being featured on YouTube’s recently launched YouTube Kids App. These are homegrown companies that have caught the attention of MDEC, Google and Youtube with their creativity and ingenuity.
Dato Yasmin Mahmood, Chief Executive Officer of MDEC who was there to officiate the celebrations was full of praise for the Malaysian talents.
“We are extremely proud of our homegrown talents for their achievements in driving Malaysia’s creative content industry. Malaysia’s talent pool is growing in both quality and quantity and as the nations ICT custodian, MDEC will continue to create opportunities and develop capabilities of local talents to produce world-class content. The road ahead is a promising one and as such, we will not rest on our laurels; instead we will forge ahead with more popular content from our brilliant talents”.
MDEC also introduced emerging kids channels by Animasia, Giggle Garage, Inspedia, Lemon Sky and Lil Critter Workshop. The channels cater to children’s curiosity and provide a world of discovery, learning and fun activities to stimulate their minds.
Sajith Sivanandan, Managing Director of Google Malaysia, Vietnam, Phillipines, and New Emerging Markets says the viewing time for families on portable devices has grown tremendously.
“Malaysians are spending more time watching YouTube on their devices – 65% of watch time on YouTube in Malaysia is via mobile.”
With YouTube Kids app, there is a lot more parental control where parents can choose what the children view and disable certain functions in YouTube. The YouTube Kids app was launched on the 5th of October 2016.
Don Anderson, Head of Kids and Learning Partnerships, Youtube Asia Pacific says his first-hand experience with his own two young children with their exposure to the power of video was testament to this.
“As a father of two young children, I’ve had first-hand exposure and how it can enrich a child’s life, whether its through listening to nursery rhymes, or accessing math and science content, or a host of other topics that entertain and engage. YouTube Kids is our first step in reimagining YouTube for families, an experience that gives you a world of video in your pockets, and a world of possibility and knowledge at your fingertips”.
Local animators that contributed to the remarkable growth include companies such as Animonsta, Giggle Garage, Tau Films and Les Copaque. Another company to keep an eye out for in animation would be Digital Durian, which will surely become a local favourite this writer believes.
