What was also interesting about the statement was that it called for the need to enact the relevant public policies through the issuance of “progressive guidelines”.

“For government and businesses to continuously digitally transform and for the country to emerge as a regional leader in cloud services, we would also need to look at enacting the relevant public policies through the issuance of progressive guidelines,” said the MDEC statement.

“This stems from the reality that, with technology moving so fast and constantly evolving, the necessary public policies need to be implemented to address new opportunities and challenges,” it added.

However, the MDEC statement did not elaborate on what these “progressive guidelines” were.

According to a reliable industry source, though, Malaysia is embarking on its “Trusted Data Zone” (TDZ) initiative aimed at establishing Malaysia as a leader in progressive data governance legislation.

The source told the New Straits Times that the TDZ initiative comes along the heels of the CLOUD (Clarifying Lawful overseas Use of Data) Act having been signed into law by the United States late last month.

“The CLOUD Act is essentially about creating a framework for countries to negotiate a new 21st century international agreement to govern cross-border access to evidence under a set of rules that ensures protection of fundamental individual privacy rights while ensuring that law enforcement can keep people safe,” said the source.

“In this light, the CLOUD Act and Malaysia’s TDZ initiative are aligned on similar principles,” added the source.
