Amid the rising privacy concerns, Meta Platform Inc, previously known as Facebook Inc, has added new identification features to log in to the metaverse, though the new changes will take some time before they go global. Unlike before, when users had to link their personal social media accounts, Facebook and Instagram, to access the company’s Virtual Reality (VR) devices, users, both new and old, can now sign up for what Meta calls “Meta accounts and Meta Horizon Profiles” and enter the metaverse.

However, that does not mean that Facebook and Instagram accounts are useless since they can be used to set up meta accounts to access Meta’s VR content. It is entirely at the disposal of the users. For instance, if they prefer social media accounts to create meta accounts, they will be linked in the account centre, which is more like a focal hub for an interlinked and integrated metaverse experience.

During the transfer, the consumers will still have access to their previous purchases and downloads. Although users do not necessarily have to link their Meta-administrated social media accounts, using them as an option to sign in to the metaverse will ensure an augmented experience in terms of sharing messages, live streaming, and finding followers.

Regarding the Oculus accounts, the company stated that they will be replaced with a “Meta Horizon Profile.” However, the replacement is not expected anytime sooner than 1st January 2023. After that, users must have their Meta account and Meta Horizon profile ready to access and enjoy the world of Meta’s virtual reality. Currently, setting up a Meta account requires up-to-date software on the oculus application and VR headset. The profile will act as a social media platform for the metaverse and accommodate all avatar-based material. It is noteworthy that the previously used term “Friends” is likely to be replaced by “Followers.” Is this to give Horizon Profile an Instagram touch?

In a move to further tighten privacy, users will have three options at their discretion: Open to Everyone, Friends and Family, and Solo. Skipping all these options will set “Friends and Family” as the default privacy setting, which can be changed anytime. Also, users can go for the “Private” setting in their Horizon profile, which will require them to review and approve the “follow” request.

As far as minors between 13 and 17 years of age are concerned, they will by default have their account’s privacy setting as “Private.”
