Covering Disruptive Technology Powering Business in The Digital Age

In driving enterprise 5G adoption forward, the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI) has recently brought together 20 key stakeholders to discuss pertinent issues, as well as to connect and collaborate on initiatives to progress the design, development and deployment of industry and enterprise 5G innovations in order to raise Malaysia’s competitiveness.

A recent report by GSMA Intelligence, revealed that Malaysia currently has a 1% adoption rate of 5G despite achieving close to 50% 5G population coverage. Industry pundits have alluded that a key indicator for the success of 5G must include enterprise innovation and use cases that provide compelling applications to intensify industry adoption.

Driving Towards a Leadership Position in Tech

With Malaysia’s ambition to raise its competitiveness and be a regional leader in 5G, new 5G enabled ports, smart hospitals, automated vehicles, smart manufacturing facilities and more must be designed from today, especially as neighbouring countries have already deployed such industry-focussed solutions to market.

“As many enterprises fast-track their digitalisation plans, we want to offer the right enabling environment—beyond infrastructure and technologies, for them to realise the full value of 5G,” said Dzuleira Abu Bakar, CEO at MRANTI, at a special roundtable discussion held at MRANTI Park last week.

According to the 2022 EY Reimagining Industry Futures study, only 24% of enterprises are truly confident that their organisation can successfully implement 5G. In this, many are said to be looking for transformation partners, not just technology suppliers—with up to 75% citing that ecosystem strategies as central to their five-year growth outlook.

“With pressures to accelerate innovation whilst inking revenue for new products and services, enterprise 5G implementations must demonstrate positive financial outcomes with confidence—and cross-sector collaborations offer a good way forward.

“At MRANTI, we connect innovators, researchers and businesses with resources and capabilities to drive better return on innovation. Beyond the hardware, partners and stakeholders—including telcos, government, corporate innovators, technical experts, academia and civil society—play an important role to incubate and catalyse innovations for a more enriching data-driven future.”

Gathering the Stakeholders and Major Players

At the roundtable were industry heavyweights, top executives and CEOs from Celcom-Digi, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia, YTL, Huawei, Digital Nasional Berhad, Ericsson, GSM Association (GSMA) and more.

These multi-stakeholder roundtable discussions open new possibilities for dynamic business models and technical collaborations that serve to advance 5G enterprise development and adoption,” Dzuleira added.

Additionally, Dzuleira explained that MRANTI PARK would provide a 5G enterprise-purposed facility soon.

“MRANTI 5G Experience Centre, to be launched by mid 2023, unlocks the potential for a wide variety of use cases to be developed, including those that help corporations meet sustainability goals and improve supply chain management—two top agendas of investors and the public alike,” Dzuleira continued. “The Centre will host a prototyping, test, demo and lab area with speeds up to 1GBps to showcase industry applications and use cases by vertical sectors.”

A Showcase of Tech

At the event was a showcase on Smart Farming by Redtone, Smart Manufacturing by Xts, HealthTech Solution by BNetworks, Security Surveillance by CelcomDigi and Flood Drone Monitoring by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Infrastructure service providers, telcos and enterprises looking to partner on programmes, test-bed a 5G Proof-of-Concept, test a 5G solution, or learn about applied 5G are welcome to connect with MRANTI.

At MRANTI Park, innovators can leverage ultra-fast 5G data networks for better communication efficiency (higher data rates, lower latency), connection density (reliability, availability and coverage) and position accuracy (higher user mobility).

The roundtable discussions follow from the recent tripartite Memorandum of Understanding inked between MRANTI, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and Ericsson to accelerate the commercialisation of 5G-enabled Science, Technology, Innovation and Economy (STIE) solutions by and for enterprises based in Malaysia. MRANTI also runs various knowledge sessions and workshops for enterprise innovation.
