National Australia Bank has partnered with Melbourne Business School to prepare 60 of its finance professionals for the disruptive changes which are coming in banking.

In July the executives will start a 12-month customised course at MBS to boost the analytical and problem-solving skills of the bank’s finance specialists.

NAB group executive finance Gary Lennon said the emphasis was on building big data skills so they could analyse and interpret the huge amount of customer data generated within the bank.

“My team told me they need more additional skills to utilise that data,” he said.

The finance leaders who will do the course have positions across the whole bank which means the learning will go to all NAB’s divisions.

Melbourne Business School dean Zeger Degraeve said the new program was being designed in partnership with NAB from the ground.

It is relevant and high impact, equipping finance teams with both the analytical and problem-solving skills and the business acumen to communicate with influence and drive greater performance,” he said.

The course will be delivered in four modules, with each one including two days of intensive coursework, as well as pre and post study.

The four modules will focus on strategic awareness and business acumen, understanding and solving complex business problems, developing trust and delivering value, and communicating with presence and impact

Professor Degraeve said the partnership had been facilitated by NAB’s head of business management Sabina Sopov who completed her MBA with Melbourne Business School in 2015.
