Covering Disruptive Technology Powering Business in The Digital Age

While almost all industries have suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic, the tech industry continues to see positive growth as the demand for tech solutions and services continue to increase. Businesses around the world are embracing technology at a quicker pace, providing an opportunity for tech companies to increase their market share.

In Malaysia, there has been a faster adoption of technologies in almost all sectors. From healthcare to manufacturing, almost every industry now understands the need to rely on technology for business continuity and to avoid any disruption.

NEC Malaysia is poised to accelerate Malaysia’s digital economy with the official opening of its new office. With a modern customer experience centre showcasing NEC’s cutting-edge biometrics, AI, IoT and touchless technologies deployed in smart cities globally, both public and private sector partners in Malaysia will now be able to preview and experience the next frontier of smart city technologies at the new customer experience centre and fast track their digital transformation plans that were disrupted by the pandemic.

Although most companies are still practising remote working, Chong Kai Wooi, Managing Director, NEC Malaysia, said businesses continue to enquire about new technologies. NEC provides them with the opportunity to experience some of the solutions either virtually or by visiting their new office, with all the necessary SOPs in place.

“As an ICT provider, we received an uptake in solutions during the MCO. We are the biggest provider of telecommunication phone systems in Malaysia for businesses and also one of the largest telecommunication infrastructure providers. During the MCO, there was a strong demand for higher capacity and this led to an uptake in the business”.

NEC completed the submarine cable system that connects the Peninsular and East Malaysia with 100 Gbps wavelength, with a speed of 4 Tbps that is upgradeable to 12.8 Tbps, in 2017. They are now looking to upgrade and improve connectivity.

Chong also mentioned that NEC will be providing AI-enabled thermal and facial recognition systems to 23 local and international airports in Malaysia that are run by Malaysian Airports Berhad. NEC, who was chosen out of an open tender to supply the technology, have begun implementing the solutions in some airports with the first scanner expected to be ready soon. Each airport will have one or two units, depending on the passenger traffic.

The new office was officiated by Datuk Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Department, and H.E. Oka Hiroshi, Japan Ambassador to Malaysia.

In his speech, the minister not only mentioned the importance of technology for businesses during this pandemic but also the concerns that come with cybersecurity. He said that cybersecurity should be a priority for organisations, with the initiative taken by both the government and the private sector.

To this, Chong said that NEC biometrics is able to help businesses deal with cybersecurity concerns by creating a digital identity for users. NEC is also looking to introduce fingerprint solutions for newborns and young children in the future as well as leverage on AI to help with the recovery of stroke patients.

Guests were given also a comprehensive walkthrough of the customer experience centre which included demonstrations featuring NEC’s Digital ID portfolio, AI-driven smart command centre and various next-generation IoT solutions.
