Just like many countries in ASEAN, digital transformation has become a powerful catalyst for change in Malaysia. But what is the current state of digital transformation in the country and how prepared are organisations to handle the associated security challenges?
To shed light on these important questions, AOPG Insights, in partnership with NEC, a leading player in the information technology and network solutions sector, recently conducted a survey aimed at uncovering the key trends, opportunities, and challenges that organisations are facing as they navigate the digital transformation journey.
Understanding how companies in Malaysia are adjusting to the new digital landscape is crucial as the globe as a whole embrace this shift. NEC states that the digital transformation journey, despite being complex, is a necessary process for any modern organisation. The group notices an acceleration in digital journeys among organisations in Malaysia, based on their survey. However, NEC emphasises the need for these organisations to focus more on security. While acknowledging the gains in operational efficiency and productivity, NEC stresses that companies should not neglect the critical importance of security infrastructure in their digital strategy.
Key findings from the report include:
- Cloud Computing is Driving Digital Transformation in Malaysia.
Cloud is already adopted by the vast majority of respondents (89%), while big data and analytics (64%), artificial intelligence and machine learning (47%) and the Internet of Things (44%) are also very popular among Malaysian businesses. 56% of respondents believe “greater operational efficiency and productivity” is the benchmark of digital transformation success. - Most Organisations Unprepared to Address Modern Security Challenges.
Only 25% of the respondents consider themselves extremely well-prepared to address today’s security challenges. The majority of respondents (75%) feel that more needs to be done to improve their security posture. To achieve this goal, organisations in Malaysia are focusing on improving four areas in particular: Data protection and privacy (86%), compliance with regulations and standards (78%), network and infrastructure security (75%), as well as cloud and application security (56%). - Zero-Trust Adoption Still Low Despite Media Hype and Potential Benefits.
Despite increasing awareness and focus on zero trust in recent years, organisations in Malaysia still face significant challenges in implementing and fully embracing this security paradigm. Zero-trust security has been fully implemented by just 17% of the participating organisations, while many are still either on the fence or are not even considering it.
These are just some of the findings that shed light on the current landscape of digital transformation in Malaysia. The report goes on to provide the best practices for overcoming digital transformation challenges, insights into the benefits and principles of zero trust, as well as valuable information that can equip organisations with the knowledge and guidance needed to navigate the path towards robust and comprehensive security measures.
