Qubole, known for its Big Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS) wares, is offering to help enterprises migrate their on-premises Cloudera-based Big Data implementations to the cloud.
For its new Cloudera Migration Program, Qubole is teaming up with WANdisco, which specializes in transactional data replication, to provide smooth cloud migrations with no downtime. The new offering seeks to lure Cloudera customers to the Qubole BDaaS (Qubole Data Service, or QDS) hosted on the Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) cloud platform.
Specifically, the program targets organizations with on-premises implementations of Cloudera Express, Cloudera Enterprise or CDH, Cloudera’s open source platform distribution. It’s designed for three use cases, Quoble said: full migration to the cloud; burst workloads to the cloud; or migration of a development environment to the cloud.
“As enterprises struggle with the expense and operational complexity of expanding on-premise systems, the adaptability, agility and cost advantages of cloud are compelling,” Qubole said in a statement yesterday. “Qubole customers have seen savings up to 80 percent for workloads using spot instances and have admins supporting hundreds of users.”
Qubole said the program enables:
- QDS on AWS to run data processing workloads on Hadoop, Spark, Presto or HBase.
- WANdisco Fusion to enable active data replication from on-premise to AWS S3 storage. This can done once or continuously for a hybrid deployment model.
- Professional services for scoping, planning, design and migration of on-premise Cloudera deployments.
- The seamless movement of data at scale that doesn’t disrupt on-premise user access, or require cloud vendor storage appliances to be sent back and forth from customer datacenters.
- Post-migration, the solution supports active transactional data movement between on-premise and cloud environments for hybrid burst-to-cloud use cases.
Although Qubole said the program targets Cloudera implementations, its program site lists as prerequisites an on-premises Hadoop cluster from Cloudera or its main competitors, Hortonworks and MapR Technologies, along with an AWS account that provides EC2 and S3 access for computing and storage services.
“The Big Data industry is shifting from on-premise to cloud as the preferred deployment model, but many early Cloudera customers are stuck with a system that wasn’t designed for the cloud,” said Ashish Thusoo, co-founder and CEO of Qubole. “Together with WANdisco, Qubole now offers the first fully packaged migration service which enables companies to experience the full benefits of Big Data analytics in the cloud.”
