Reebelo, a trusted marketplace for refurbished electronics, has set its eye on solving the rising 364 kiloton e-waste problem in Malaysia through sustainable technology. Branding itself as an eco-friendly player in the consumer market, Reebelo is on a mission to save 60 tonnes of e-waste by 2022, one device at a time.
According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2020, a record 53.6 million metric tonnes (Mt) of electronic waste was generated worldwide in 2019, and it is expected to reach 74 Mt by 2030. In Malaysia, only 25% of e-waste is recycled, necessitating more proactive measures to be taken to prevent a further detriment to the country’s natural landscape.
Recognising e-waste as the fastest growing waste category on the planet, and following notable success in countries like Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, Reebelo has embarked on a mission to close the waste loop here in Malaysia. The e-commerce marketplace enables consumers to buy refurbished smart devices like smartphones, tablets and notebooks, among others, at an affordable rate to ultimately strengthen Malaysia’s circular economy. The company has also just launched its buyback program in Malaysia, where consumers can sell their old and unused devices back to Reebelo’s partners, where the devices are then refurbished and given a new lease of life.
Partnering with certified tech refurbishment companies locally and regionally, Reebelo is focused on helping consumers switch from a linear way of tech consumption to a more sustainable method through refurbishment and recycling.
“Our e-waste problem is growing at an exponential rate. Left unattended, it is only going to turn into an immovable mountain, causing hazardous consequences. Reebelo was founded to tackle this crisis, to refresh the way we all consume technology. We believe in a future where everyone has access to affordable and quality electronics in a sustainable, eco-friendly way”, said Shen Ong, Country Director at Reebelo Malaysia.
He added, “Here at Reebelo, we are giving e-waste a second life by reviving electronics, turning them into new assets. Our goal at the end of the day is to change how people use their gadgets and their perception about refurbished devices. We want to empower consumers to adopt more eco-friendly habits in the long-term when buying technology”.
Help Consumers Navigate the E-Waste Era Sustainably
The world today is tech-hungry. The advent of digitalisation across industries and at the consumer level has led to a surge in the usage of technology. At the same time, the quantity and speed of tech discard have been rapidly increasing in recent years. Whether from breakdown, slowdown or with the emergence of new electronic models, consumers are now readily discarding their tech at the slightest inconvenience. This combined with planned obsolescence, and other ‘end-of-life’ processes, hurts not only the wallet, but also results in negative environmental and health consequences, leaving behind a toxic and destructive waste stream e-waste.
In addition to giving devices a second life and long-term gains for the environment, customers will also be able to reap the benefits of considerable savings when buying refurbished devices from Reebelo. Refurbished devices are quality gadgets that have been restored to their original condition through cosmetic fixes to the case and screen, debugging and additions to the devices, with all of them fully tested and graded for validation. Buyers will be able to enjoy reliable devices at discounted prices, with no hidden charges or tie-ins.
In changing the way consumers view refurbished technology, Reebelo aims to reduce the rate at which e-waste is created without compromising the quality of all devices sold. All refurbished devices have undergone thorough testing and cleaning to ensure that they are functioning and free of defects. Sold in sealed boxes with the originally supplied accessories, each device goes through a 40-point checklist to minimise the risk of functionality issues. These steps cover the device’s battery health, screen condition, and working buttons, among others. As an added feature, Reebelo has a robust 3-month warranty and a 14-day returns policy in the event that the products do not meet the expectations of the customer.
Furthermore, in partnership One Tree Planted, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to environmental planting, Reebelo ensures that a tree is planted for every purchase made. Thus far, 20,000 trees have been planted across multiple countries, including in the Amazon rainforest, Australia and New Zealand. This collaboration is in line with Reebelo’s mission to leave a positive impact on the world by reducing the carbon footprint left behind by unattended e-waste.
