Global satellite connectivity solutions provider SES S.A. has announced that its O3b mPOWER Satellite Constellation System will provide connectivity to remote areas in Southeast Asia. The launch of the system is scheduled for mid-December and is the first of five O3b mPOWER launches. The constellation is expected to begin providing services in Q3 2023.
O3b mPOWER will help bridge the digital divide in previously unconnected parts of Southeast Asia by delivering high-quality connectivity in remote areas or locations where geography makes communications infrastructure expensive. The system will also support 4G and 5G mobile deployments in remote areas and is expected to launch in major regions around Southeast Asia and other markets next year.
The SES O3b mPOWER is a second-generation medium-Earth orbit system that offers low-latency connectivity ranging from 50 megabits per second to multiple gigabits per second to various organisations worldwide. The project aims to push for digital inclusion and connect the unconnected, especially those in remote areas across the globe. The project is expected to benefit various sectors, including telecommunications, maritime, aviation, energy, and governments. It will also provide instant bulletproof recovery solutions in case of natural disasters by ensuring uninterrupted connectivity.
Connecting the Unconnected
SES has also declared its intention to revolutionise Malaysia by bridging the gap between the country’s commercial centres and its more remote regions. Since beginning operations in the Asia Pacific region, the company has been actively working with clients and partners in Malaysia. As a result of recent investments in SES-12 HTS’s Malaysia Gateway infrastructure, the company is now able to provide its clients with better support.
SES’s Vice President of Sales for Asia, Harsh Verma, has recognised the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) project’s first phase as an important step in meeting the growing need for high-quality fixed and mobile broadband in Malaysia. Huawei is just one of several major companies that have worked on this project in the past. SES is eager to make a significant financial commitment to the upcoming second phase of JENDELA, as Malaysia serves as a primary entry point to the company’s APAC market.
Furthermore, by improving connectivity for e-learning, e-government, e-health, and the digital economy, O3b mPOWER will help to close the digital divide in rural population centres. In remote industrial use cases, including mining, offshore and marine, agricultural, and fishing, a satellite link is highly valuable for supporting communication networks. Often, these industries must operate in inaccessible locations where terrestrial connectivity is either spotty at best or non-existent. Satellite links provide a fast and reliable option to help these businesses communicate and run smoothly. SES is well-equipped to support these growing sectors and the people they serve by providing better connectivity.
Ultimately, SES is dedicated to delivering cutting-edge solutions to close the digital gap in Malaysia and meet the increasing demand for network capacity. SES is able to provide satellite connectivity to assist various businesses and increase citizens’ access to essential services like e-learning, e-government, and e-health by utilising cutting-edge technology and collaborating with local clients and partners. SES’s initiatives are crucial to advancing Malaysia’s digital transformation and boosting the country’s economy.
