CYBERVIEW Sdn Bhd has secured a Smart City Catalyst funding from the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) to implement a Smart Traffic Management System, or more commonly known as Smart Traffic Lights, in Cyberjaya.
It is part of efforts to further enhance the Cyberjaya Smart City development.
First announced in the National Internet of Things (IoT) Strategic Roadmap (a collaboration with Mimos), the Smart Traffic Lights will be designed and implemented to manage vehicular traffic in the city.
The system will help increase the efficiency of public services and city living, improve the quality of life, create a safe city, and to improve the standard of environmental sustainability.
Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), through its wholly-owned subsidiary Intelsec Sdn Bhd, is the collaborative partner of Cyberview in the implementation of the Smart Traffic Lights.
“The Smart Traffic Lights will be a reality, with help from the Smart City catalyst funding by MDeC.
“As the technology hub enabler in Malaysia, Cyberview sees the implementation of the smart city project to be in line with the goal of advancing Cyberjaya into a global technology hub (GTH).
“The Smart Traffic Lights can be seen as a benchmark by other smart city projects,” said Cyberview managing director Faris Yahaya.
The Smart City Catalyst funding by MDeC aims to promote adoption of smart cities solutions in MSC Malaysia Cybercities and Cybercentres.
Cyberjaya, as the premier MSC Malaysia Cybercity, secured the funding based on the technical merits of the proposed Smart Traffic Management System and also on the projected impact to the business and local communities.
The adoption of smart cities solutions will help increase the attractiveness of MSC Malaysia business locations to ICT investors and MSC Malaysia-status companies.
“The installation of smart solutions for the first time in Cyberjaya also enhances the Living Lab proposition of using Cyberjaya as a test bed for new and innovative technologies. The project can be set as a benchmark to be followed by other smart-city projects,” Faris noted.
The traffic lights communicate between the intersections and are linked across the eight intersections to the command centre in Cyberjaya. This will form the first phase of the smart-city project.
As the system will be IoT-based, the traditional infrastructure that is usually associated with a centralised traffic management system such as legacy connectivity and hard-wired data collection systems, will not be used.
Instead, each intersection will have an LTE-equipped controller which controls cameras with analytic capabilities, that is mounted above the traffic lights.
The camera will analyse the traffic situation, and will intelligently direct traffic at the intersection to reduce waiting time at the lights.
Data collected from the cameras is wirelessly transmitted to a traffic management command centre, which will have direct access to the lights’ controllers.
With the deployment of the Smart Traffic Lights, Cyberjaya stands to boost the quality of its traffic management.
At the same time, it can improve the governance of traffic data management between the various authorities, agencies, transport service providers and related parties to have a better understanding of traffic in Cyberjaya.
The Cyberjaya Smart Traffic Lights is the first project under the purview of Cyberview’s smart-city infrastructure focus, the goal of which is to improve the efficiency and quality of infrastructure in Cyberjaya. Other focus areas under Cyberview’s smart city framework includes Smart Environment, Smart Economy and Smart Social.
