Organisations are now moving to the cloud and for good reason. In a report by cloud migration expert, Rackspace Technology, 42% of organisations said they need to provide global access to data, which can be achieved through the cloud. In addition, 37% mentioned better flexibility and 36% are looking to reduce the burden on the IT department with the cloud.
However, migrating from one IT environment to another is not an easy task and organisations need to take many intricate steps before they can realise the benefits of the cloud. In fact, various studies have shown that quite a significant percentage of cloud migration projects are delayed, over budget and even worse, do not reach completion.
Such findings can be discouraging for companies, especially for those who are looking to accelerate their digital transformation. Cloud adoption, however, should not necessarily be daunting. One must consider that the challenge in successful cloud migration is not always about the cloud itself but in having the right strategy and choosing the right workloads to migrate.
Migrating to the cloud is not something a company does every day but there are steps that businesses can take in order to overcome shortcomings in terms of knowledge, skills or experience to ensure an efficient and successful migration. For instance, by assessing your application workloads and having a plan on which to migrate, you can have a smooth journey to the cloud.
There are five ways to classify your workloads:
- Workloads that can be retained on-prem as they are still in their best state.
- Workloads that need to be retired since they are obsolete.
- Workloads that you can move to the cloud as-is (a simple lift & shift).
- Workloads that can be replaced with a cloud-native one.
- Workloads that need to be re-architected to fit in the cloud.
When migrating to the public cloud, picking the right order to migrate your workloads is also critical. After assessing which workloads to migrate, it is essential to understand which can be easily migrated first and which require longer preparation.
For many organisations, when it comes to on-prem to public cloud migration, this may include virtualisation, as migrating virtual machines (VMs) to a public cloud offers a number of benefits. When you migrate your VMs to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), for example, you can reduce management and storage costs, while still utilising the same tools, processes and policies that you use on-prem. You can also enhance the availability of your VMs by locating your data protection targets in different zones in Google Cloud.
Handling your VMs on-premises alone can become more challenging and impractical as your organisation accelerates its digital transformation and you require greater reliability, availability and agility from your IT. With Google Cloud, one of the world’s leading cloud providers, you can effectively shift your data centre’s operations to the cloud, which will allow you to modernise critical applications more easily.
That is why, to really leverage the power of the cloud for your VMs, having the right partner in your migration is important. Rackspace Technology, a trusted Google Cloud Managed Services Provider, offers an expert professional services framework for your overall migration.
With Rackspace Technology by your side, you give yourself the ability to safely innovate, add strategic value to your business and accelerate the return on investment for your GCP migration.
To find out if your organisation is ready for much-needed cloud migration and whether Google Cloud is right for your business, Rackspace Technology brings you an online assessment that can help determine your organisation’s readiness to the cloud – whatever your business objectives.
