The digital transformation age has companies desperately looking for the upper-hand in an ever-changing environment while trying to maintain their clients and business models. The Internet of Things (IoT) has expanded the possibilities of how those transformations can be monitored and improved on.
IoT has become one of the most disruptive technological advancements and according to research from IDC, close to 30 billion things will be connected by 2020, driving the efficiencies of the enterprise to launch new and better products and services. This has created an explosion of data that will need to be processed, stored, managed and analysed to drive business value. The technology will generate an immense volume and variety of data that would require a new way of information infrastructure to realise value. The automotive industry, for example, has emerged as one of the industries to benefit the most from the proliferation of IoT. It has seen leaps and bounds in recent years, as more and more automotive manufacturers look to leverage the mass interconnectivity available today to empower their vehicles using IoT technology. This introduction of IoT devices, combined with analytics and AI, have impacted both the drivers of the vehicle and how manufacturers are improving the automotive industry, turning vehicles into independent and autonomous business assets.
One example of the power of this is apparent when Navistar, a leading manufacturer of commercial trucks, buses, defence vehicles, and engines, partnered with Cloudera, the modern platform for machine learning and analytics optimized for the cloud to transform into a data-driven enterprise.
With Cloudera Enterprise, Navistar has built a large scalable platform that allows them to collect and store data from multiple sources and formats, including data from sensors in vehicles to deliver predictive vehicle maintenance, system diagnostics and management, and route optimization. This allows Navistar to maintain consistent on-time delivery and minimal vehicle downtime.
This IoT-enabled remote diagnostics platform, called OnCommand Connection, collects over 70 telematics and sensor feeds across 375,000 connected vehicles to offer real-time monitoring and diagnostics of each vehicle. The platform uses machine learning and advanced analytics to automatically detect engine problems early and predict maintenance requirements and has helped fleet and vehicle owners to reduce maintenance costs by more than 30 percent.
Cloudera and Navistar won the 2018 IoT Breakthrough Award for Connected Car Innovation. In July 2017, TDWI, the leading global provider of analytics and data management research and education, named Navistar’s Internet-of-Things (IoT) deployment of Cloudera, a winner of the 2017 Best Practices Award in the Big Data category. Therefore, with an increasing number of the world’s largest enterprises using IoT to innovate and disrupt their industries, improving the overall customer experience, the task then becomes that much easier with Cloudera providing the know-how that the organisation can fall back on for support.
