Any object can be connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) as long as they have digital identifiers and means to transfer data within a network. As a result, organisations utilising IoT for their equipment, logistics and sensors, among many others, are subjected to a huge amount of data needed for analytics.

On the other hand, cloud computing is a technology that lets companies process data virtually anywhere, providing them with the availability of computer system resources such as computing power and storage without the need for capital expenses.

Between IoT and cloud computing, it is apparent that the two technologies can work side-by-side so that organisations can leverage the benefits of each one. Especially in today’s digital landscape where various applications and devices connect to each other making up the IoT environment, cloud computing is proven to be essential for many businesses.

Organisations wanting to deploy IoT solutions within their operations can also see cloud computing as the avenue for the devices in the environment to generate, exchange and process data. Let us take a manufacturing company for example.

Inside the company, there is machinery producing a product, various sensors responsible for maintaining order in the workplace such as temperature and humidity, devices including computers, the supply chain – all of which is connected to the Internet and handling a continuous flow of data.

Such data involves sensitive and useful information, such as the state of production and analysis for insights. Organisations can then use these for their decision-making, effectively improving the business. However, the amount of data needed to be stored and processed before realising these benefits is huge.

In addition, companies often find themselves wasting the potential of data, as they do not have the appropriate platform or solutions in their IT environment to process such data. This is where cloud computing comes to the fore, enabling organisations to leverage their data through its processing power.

With cloud computing, businesses can lessen cost, as they do not have to build data centres on-premises since cloud offers a pay-as-you-go basis. Meaning, companies can scale their use of the cloud depending on how many devices or systems they have on their IT environment.

Organisations are also able to access such data remotely at any time and from any place through the Internet. With this capability, companies can realise remote operations within their workplace. For manufacturing industries, this can mean digital twin operations for their production and then tracking their products up to the end customer.

Using cloud computing with IoT operations, organisations can ensure consistent updates such as in improvement and security, since you can rely on your cloud vendors for your computing capabilities.

The Internet of Things and cloud computing are two technologies that have proven to be essential in the business landscape today and integrating them with each other can propagate potentials necessary for your digital transformation up to the future.
