Globally, businesses are seeking to develop hybrid workforces that are resilient, sustainable, and progressive that enable workers to perform well from any location.

Ever since the pandemic, we have seen markets, customer needs and business preferences change almost instantaneously over these past two years. What does this mean for IT leaders?

In an interview with Praveen Kumar, Senior Vice President & GM – Asia Pacific & Japan at Rocket Software, he said “Technology continues to be an important consideration for business and IT leaders in designing and navigating these changes by thinking and working with the most effective elements of multiple approaches, and we are seeing an evolution towards the world of hybrids across all industries.”

According to a study by Forrester, APAC information workers are more eager to return to the office as high-density living situations which accounts for 58% of workers in the region find the work from home (WFH) setup less productive, compared with 46% globally.

However, there is a problem that Praveen found based on that finding. In order to preserve or attract top talent in competitive hiring markets, he claimed that forcing employees to fully return to the office is not a viable solution.

“Leaders will find themselves adapting to new management strategies to cater to a permanently hybrid workforce, and a collaboration is vital between business and IT to make informed decisions about long-term work arrangements to ensure that employees have the right tools and work environment while maximising efficiency and productivity,” he explained.

Addressing the Problem of Distributed IT

Therefore, in order to achieve that, it is now more important than ever for the workforce to have a unified IT environment. The IT environment is growing exponentially as the tools that enable hybrid teams to evolve, and organisations are expected to adapt to this new structure to operate and manage their IT infrastructure effectively in order to support distributed teams.

In order to build the most productive IT environment for their business, Praveen believes that moving forward, it is critical for businesses to use their years of technology investment on par with the latest tools available.

“By optimising the existing stack for a modern user experience and improved performance, organisations can create an integrated IT environment and work more effectively with a modern hybrid cloud strategy,” he added.

However, before you do that, an organisation must take some factors into account before unifying its IT system. Many organisations struggle to manage a dispersed IT infrastructure, which keeps IT teams in a firefighting mode and hinders them from reaching a higher level of maturity. In order to gain visibility and tame the complexity of your IT environment, Praveen advises you to consider and identify what you are already doing in the cloud.

“While cost savings may not be as big a driver in the shift to hybrid cloud as other business outcomes, a unified IT infrastructure provides scalability and elasticity of the public cloud while replicating the security of on-premises data centres,” he said. “The ideal IT infrastructure is constantly changing based on many business and technology factors. Consider the workflows that you want to move between public, private, and hybrid cloud environments while maintaining manageability or consistent security policies.”

He noted that the higher number of experienced employees retiring and an influx of young professionals joining the workforce should be taken into account by firms when deciding to modernise/move to a hybrid cloud.

Companies still struggle with a lack of qualified candidates, according to a recent Rocket Software survey. Of the respondents, 45% of IT professionals said that the best strategy to sustain talent pipelines is to modernise existing systems. By modernising, businesses can bring in options that are appealing to today’s professionals and the organisations hiring them.
