The Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held activities that gave its students and other interested participants the opportunities to learn more about trending topics in technology nowadays: big data and smart cities.
The term Big Data has been discussed frequently by the world community in the last few years. It is referred to as the technology that provides knowledge which is used as a basis for decision-making.
In the report released by the University, UNESCO Chair of Analytics and Data Science Prof Maria Fasli, PhD, NTF, FHEA, asserted that information technology has experienced a rapid development, including big data technologies, during the “Acquiring Insight from Big Data” sharing session.
The use of mobile phones and internet makes information exchange faster and easier. People have inadvertently shared their personal data to third parties through social media.
Big data has become an important element in the current era as it is used to detect the patterns of community behaviour. It has become a widely used basis of reference for institutions or companies in making strategies and decisions that affect many people.
Furthermore, a lecturer from the University added that big data is currently being used to analyse the community behavioural patterns of Indonesians online and on social media by using the Social and Online Media Analytics (Semantic) app.
As many as 60 international students from 11 countries were given the opportunity to participate in a summer course focusing on smart cities. For two weeks, participants from France, Romania, India, South Korea, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia will gain knowledge and understanding on the concepts of developing smart cities, villages and regions.
According to the announcement made by the University, discussions will emphasise on the importance of developing a smart village and strengthening a smart region.
The course will not be limited within classroom activities only because the participants will be given an opportunity to visit a smart green village in Flory Village, Sleman; digital SMES in Borobudur Village; a smart tourism village and Gamatechno so they can learn about application models.
