Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with other universities for the exploration and collaboration partnership in research and development (R&D) projects in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem at the university campus here today.
Aiming towards establishing smart cities in Sarawak, the projects will involve Curtin Malaysia, University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and University Technology Mara Sarawak Campus (UiTM).
The MoA signing was part of the three-day Industry 4.0 Awareness Programme organised by Swinburne Innovation Malaysia (Swim) Sdn Bhd and Swinburne School of Information and Communication Technologies Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science.
The awareness programme aims to encourage Sarawak manufacturers to leverage on the latest Industry 4.0 technology in order to achieve high competitiveness – with focus on timber and food manufacturing.
The MoA outlines the engagement of the four top universities in Sarawak to design, build and deploy a minimum IoT ecosystem in an existing city using low-cost, off-the-shelf components.
The ecosystem will be developed around pilot locations namely Swinburne Campus in Kuching, Unimas campuses in Kuching and Kota Samarahan, UiTM campuses in Kota Samarahan and Mukah and Curtin Malaysia campus in Miri.
In his opening speech, Swinburne Sarawak deputy vice-chancellor and chief executive officer Professor John Wilson said that continuous leaning is the new norm as part of the Industry 4.0 revolution.
“The fourth industrial revolution is about sharing of the economy and data, for the good and the bad,” he said.
Swinburne Sarawak students received top-notch Australian education and also awarded the same Australian qualification that allows for broader recognition around the world.
Moreover, the university has a culturally diverse and colourful campus community which is home to about 3,500 students from 45 countries.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Chief Minister, Minister of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development and Second Minister for Urban Development and Natural Resources Sarawak Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
The programme was supported by Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development (MIED) and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA).
Among the attendance were Assistant Minister of Industries and Investment Malcolm Mussen Lamoh and permanent secretary of MIED Datu Liaw Soon Eng.
