At the Artificial Intelligence Conference hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands, Wave Computing announced it is expanding its facility in Manila as part of its plan to scale commercial operations in 2018 and beyond. Wave’s new “AI Center of Excellence” (CoE) will grow its presence in the Philippines to complement its existing data science, engineering and customer support capabilities, while furthering its ongoing collaborations with the country’s leading universities, private sector enterprises and government institutions in the areas of AI and deep learning. Wave’s Manila-based CoE also enhances the company’s recent organizational growth that includes the addition of new sales, marketing and engineering talent in its Silicon Valley-based headquarters as well as other global locations.
Derek Meyer, CEO of Wave Computing, said, “The Philippines is increasingly being recognized for its growing pool of talented, highly qualified professionals that span multiple high-technology disciplines. Our enhanced presence here is in recognition of this trend, which is particularly evident in the fields of data and computer science, and builds upon Wave Computing’s footprint that was established in 2017. And, Wave’s Manila-based CoE will help us better service the growing deep learning customer opportunities throughout Asia across industries such as retail, financial services, manufacturing and more.”
Denissa G. Venturanza, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands, said, “We are thrilled that Wave Computing has chosen to grow its operations here in the Philippines. Wave is helping expand the possibilities of AI to make it easier to leverage by businesses who have a wealth of data but limited deep learning resources. Their vision will not only benefit companies throughout Asia, but also offer new opportunities to the growing data science ecosystem here in the Philippines that is increasingly being recognized as a world-leading resource for top talent.”
Dr. C.P. David, Professor at the University of the Philippines and former Executive Director of the DOST Innovation Council, said, “In 2017, the Philippine government undertook a comprehensive effort to improve the country’s AI and data science capabilities. By collaborating with private industry, academia and the local data science community, we have been able to grow the talent pool that is helping fuel the global AI phenomenon. This included partnerships with Google, Coursera and Wave Computing, which helped us catch up with the newest technologies and tools in AI and data science. Lastly, I am pleased to see Wave’s increased global R&D investment in the Philippines which is a testament to the country being both a viable market and a rich source of talent in these emerging fields.”
Stephanie Sy, Founder and Data Scientist at Thinking Machines, one of the leading data science consultancies in the Philippines, said, “Today’s data revolution is hugely changing how companies, governments and academic institutions leverage data to improve decision making. Global professionals are helping fuel this trend by leveraging their expertise at cutting-edge companies in Silicon Valley to Asia and beyond. Wave Computing’s expanded investment here is yet another affirmation of the value the data science community in the Philippines offers to today’s global industry.”
