Big App Challenge Winners Announced

The Big App Challenge Grand winner announcement and prize giving ceremony was held at the Wrangle Malaysia 2016 event which was co-organised by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Cloudera and Big Data Malaysia.

The final presentation for all the groups, both from the professional track and the academia track, was held at the MDEC office a day earlier. The top 3 from each track was announced immediately after all the presentations, however the final result was only announced at the Wrangle Event.

For the Professional track, Deep Minds took 1st place prize of RM20,000 consisting of team members  Adrian Wong Teck Keong, Dr Mohd Hafizuddin bin Mohd Yusof and Muhammad Azlan Shah bin Mohamed Azman. Their winning app was on prevention of fake emergency calls called WatchUs. It is presented as a recognition app which will prevent callers from being anonymous. Those who make calls to emergency lines will have their details displayed.

Second place went to BigHero5 consisting of Juv Chan Kae Siang, Poo Kuan Hoong, Kok Chon Hooi and Jason Wee Pei Chieh. They took home a grand total of RM15,000 for their efforts. Their winning app was called PropertySenze; a Property Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Third placing went to HydroSave consisting of Ng Kok Kwan and Leong Yok Tien with their app for Leak detection using LoRa, Sound Sensors and Arduino board. The winning app is an IoT enabled solution to detect and inform authorities when there is a water leakage in the underground piping. They took home RM10,000 prize money.

For the Academia track, the winning app was from AAP who consisted of Chin Koh Shian, Dickson Pang Yee Sheng, Hiew Ming An and Magindran Raamanathan. Their winning app was using Pow Toons to find the best possible outcomes for students looking to see where their strength lies and predict the best suitable course or job. They took home RM10,000.

Second placing went to single contestant Ng Weng Ge who took home RM8,000 for his app on Enriching Cinema Advertising with Movie Rating Prediction. Through the app, cinema outlets will know ahead of time if a movie will be a best seller or otherwise and rate the movie based on that predictive analysis. With that they will also be able to derive the cost of advertisements for the particular movies.

Third placing went to SuperLon. Team members consisted of Lim Sing Shu, Lim Jin Xong, Ng Kok An, Ng Kok Wah and Khor Tze Hym. Their winning app was reducing low birth weight rates in new born babies. They won a grand total of RM 5,000. The researched conducted through the data analysis informs mothers of the potential possibilities of having a low birth weight baby and the remedies to it.

The Big App Challenge is now in its 3rd year and has been very successful in nurturing young talents as well as experienced professionals to be involved in creating new apps and becoming exposed to the world of data analytics. This was made possible by the efforts of the team at MDEC lead by Dr Karl. 2017 will see even more breakthroughs for the team in terms of making Malaysia the Digital Nation and the HUB in ASEAN for Big Data Analytics.
